If I remember correctly, that pic was taken after his win over Lleyton at the Frech Open. I know that Lopez isn´t a good player on clay, but you shouldn´t forget that Tommy is very inconsistent. On a good day, he can beat everyone on clay. But on a bad day, he loses to "clay-gods" like Soderling, Benneteau or even Karlovic. What surprises me the most, is that he didn´t have this shocking losses when he was younger (like in 2003). If you look at his 2003 results, he only lost to claycourt-specialists or top players on clay (f.e. Calleri 2x, Moya, Federer, Zabaleta, Costa, Lappenti and Coria). But in the last 2 years he lost to the likes of Ljubicic, Karlovic, Soderling, Gasquet (in 2004, not the one of today), Fish and T. Johansson. But regardless, I would take Tommy anyday over Lopez. How many matches has he won this year on clay? 3 or 4? So, that decision is ridiculous in my opinion and has nothing to do with the results and the performance of the players, but with personal preferences.
I watched that match on blurred web TV,I remember that blue outfit guy acted so excited like that after he won the big victory. But at the time I only cheered for Guga and didn't know this guy at all.
If you don't believe me you may check this in getty images.
Show you one pic after he won against Hewitt!I really love this blue outfit
and his confidence!
I even call out Lopez SUCKS on clay,
but Tommy sucks on grass this year too.
Yep and I don't think he is consistent. He was in the final in Estoril this year, but after that he was toasted by Benneteau in Roma AMS EVENT.
And most of other guys that you mentioned are big servers,I can't believe he is still afraid of those on CLAY whereas in junior he even can beat Roddick on hard court.
He can lose 0-6 1-6 2-6 this crappy results to some of them too.
So imo Tommy isn't suitable to play a single rubber on clay this year. But he is a better choice to be picked as a doubles player.I see the reason that they pick Lopez instead of him but I think it's just an excuse.
Don't tell me Lopez is friendlier with Nadal and he partners with him much more this year so make this choice.Last year in Olympics they guys even picked Tommy and Lopez as the doubles team even though they don't get along so well and they haven't played doubles together for a long time.Tommy recovered from his injury about mid May.He has enough time to prepare to play DC doubles with Nadal. When Nadal still played with Lopez a lot,I know that Craptains have made the decision to kick out Tommy.
Last year Juan played like crap but they even picked him to play live single rubber. Why don't they believe in Tommy to only play doubles this time?I also found one astonishing news:
Spain certainly enjoyed a fair bit of luck over the past weekend. The injury to Fabrice Santoro that prevented him from playing in the doubles turned a match the French were expected to win into a 50:50, and Nadal's brilliance in singles rescued a potentially embarrassing situation when the Spaniards discovered neither Ferrero nor Moya could play on the final day. Ferrero's late withdrawal prompted a decision to put Robredo in against Clement and leave Nadal to face Mathieu, but the backroom staff were too late announcing the switch, so Robredo had to face Mathieu after all.
As it happened, Robredo won the dead rubber 64 64 to make the overall score 4-1.
Tell me,if you decided Nadal to play against Clement early, what’s the reason to “change” since Juan couldn’t play? What an act!
This time Juan is picked in the team even Tommy's single and doubles result is better than him ON CLAY this year.Based on these examples and other events,I don’t think they like Juan the most but I’m quite sure they dislike Tommy so much.
I think picking Juan is another excuse for eliminating Tommy. But I predict Juan won’t play a single rubber unless Ferrer is whipped in a live single rubber. He won’t play a doubles one too.Italians doubles players are not like USA twins that strong, also Nadal can play single and doubles in two continuous days.So wake up Tommy, you were born in a bloody country and aren't like Paulo case,he chokes in DC and ATP matches often but a warm-hearted French captain can comfort him in 02 DC final and trust him more than once.Thank god that man at least didn't choke in the last live rubber in March!
