Re: Quest for #1

I was wrong about Ferrero, it's not 175 pts it's 110. I looked at the wrong thing oops.

Hopefully Madrid was a real wake-up call for him and it's intensified his desire to go into Basel and Paris with the intention that he had all summer long - that fire. Ferrero has nothing to defend in Paris but Roddick and Federer both have QF points - that could end up being a factor also, I guess.

From the way it looks like Ferrero played today, being tired may or may not be an issue in Basel, and it could become an issue in Paris but maybe not there either. Would depend on how he does I guess. But since his points count for Basel, he will lose points if he does not make Semis again, whereas it will not affect Andy or Federer in the same way.

How come carpet is better for Andy than the Madrid hardcourt?
Yea I agree that JCF won't tank...but along the same parallel you have mentioned, JCF did pull out of Basel next week.

Carpet generally suits Andy better because it is faster than the Madrid court. It benefits the server a bit more and Andy generally doesn't have to engage in longer rallies.

Plus the Madrid surface is considered more of a slow hard court.

Yep, he did pull out... I sort of had a feeling. Maybe andy will seize the opportunity to gain as much as he can from the little tourney.

Thanks for explaining about the courts - that makes sense.

Re: Quest for #1

He's not a short Speedy Gonzalez anymore, but
Andy can rally with & beat anyone...the serve
was not a weapon until he was 16 years old.
He didn't have a good serve because already
at 10,
Andy won competitions trading rallies when
he was very small.

I just don't think he's allowed to
train on different courts enough...
he's not just a 2 surface player...clay, carpet, grass, indoor hardcourt, etc. shouldn't be problems.

Andy needs to get edgy & stop applauding his opponent like a spectator...remember Wimbledon?

He better prove he's worthy of his rank.
Right now,
he doesn't realize how his schedule wears him down.
SNL & a long break are bad enough to take his
ranking away.

Re: Quest for #1

I think SNL might be a welcome departure for him to clear his head right before houston. I was a little concerned at first but now I'm at the point where I really do not think he or Brad would let him do a tv show to sacrifice his performance in Houston.

Re: Quest for #1

I'm not sure about that. He's never done it before so he doesn't know whether it will take a lot out of him. It's a little experiment that has the potential of not working out that well.

But we will never know for sure unless he wins the whole thing. Then we can look back and at our worries.

Re: Quest for #1

I don't know... I just can't imagine that he would do something like that right before one of the biggest tourneys of his life if he and his coach didn't think he could handle it without sacrificing his tennis at all.

It's NYC so I'm sure he'll find tennis courts like the ones in Houston to practice on and the SNL rehearsals are a whole week so I don't think it's all that terribly intense (unless he can't memorize his lines :P)

Plus, I don't think every one of the 8 will play on the first Monday in Houston, so maybe Andy will have a day off to get more used to Houston since he can't arrive til early Sunday morning (about a 3 - 3.5 hour flight from NY to Houston).

I'm sure it'll work out ok And if Andy DID sacrifice his performance in Houston for a TV show then I guess we didn't know him as well as we thought. I can be wrong a lot but this time I really hope to be right lol.

Re: Quest for #1

You're right. Not everyone starts on the first Monday. Houston tournament officials will probably schedule him on Tuesday cuz of the situation.

Only to have shouts of "favoritism" ring down.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for fair weather.

October in Houston is glorious. The best month there really. December is good too -- April is ok. February is usually pretty good too.

Re: Quest for #1

What's so ludicrous is people are screaming
favoritism for Andy just because they play outdoors.
Why would other players, who've no trouble outdoors, be at a disadvantage? These
people with double standards are afraid he'd get
to #1--that's all. AFTER all, he's not playing much
& won a higher percentage of matches in his career than Ferrero
& Federer. Their fans can't deny it, & the entry
system counts points from last year for most
of this year--which inflated 2002 Masters Cup players' rankings.
