Number One Pick In WTT Draft.

Sampras top pick in World Team Tennis draft

11:43 a.m. March 28, 2006

MIAMI – Pete Sampras was the No. 1 overall pick in the World Team Tennis Pro League draft Tuesday, chosen by the Newport Beach Breakers.

Sampras, who retired after winning the 2002 U.S. Open for his record 14th Grand Slam singles title, plans to play in about a half-dozen WTT matches.

Newport Beach moved up from 11th in the draft order, sending financial considerations to the Houston Wranglers for the top pick.

Venus Williams will play for the Philadelphia Freedoms, Martina Navratilova the Boston Lobsters, and Anna Kournikova the Sacramento Capitals. The defending champion New York Sportimes protected their rights to John McEnroe and Martina Hingis.

The regular season is July 6-26, with the WTT Finals July 28-30 at Newport Beach, Calif.

WTT Player Draft set for Tuesday, March 28
03/27/06 - World TeamTennis (WTT)

Pete Sampras. Venus Williams. John McEnroe. Anna Kournikova. Who will be playing for your favorite WTT teams this summer? That question will be answered when the 2006 WTT Pro League Player Draft gets underway at 10 am (EST) on Tuesday, March 28, in Miami. For the first time in League history, fans can follow the draft results live online at

The 12 teams will draft in reverse order of the previous year's final team standings, based on overall match won/loss record. The New York Sportimes, the 2005 WTT Champions, will draft last. For the Houston Wranglers, the only good thing about their 2005 record is they get the top spot in the 2006 draft.

Players expected to be taken in the first rounds of the draft include Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams, Nicole Vaidisova, Anna Kournikova, Mardy Fish, Anna-Lena Groenefeld, and the doubles team of Mike and Bob Bryan.

Teams can protect the rights to players who suited up for them during the previous year or even trade those rights to another team for a player or financial consideration. Draft day traditionally includes a few position or player trades during and after the draft. The final draft results, including all trades, will be posted no later than 2 p.m. EST on the website. The 2006 WTT schedule will be released mid- April.

Sampras Coming To Avon
March 29, 2006
By TOMMY HINE, Courant Staff Writer

Four years was long enough. Pete Sampras will return to competition this summer for the first time since 2002 when he plays for the Newport Beach Breakers in the World TeamTennis Pro League, including a July match in Avon against the FoxForce.

Sampras, a 14-time Grand Slam champion, was selected by the Breakers with the top pick in the WTT draft Tuesday in Miami.

The FoxForce didn't draft a marquee or exempt player. Instead, they protected Meghann Shaughnessy and Australia's Lisa McShea and picked Glenn Weiner and Goran Dragicevic in later rounds.

"We had bad luck with our no-show marquee player [Boris Becker] last year," FoxForce owner Lisa Wilson-Foley said. "We decided instead to take visits this year. We put a lot of eggs in Pete Sampras' basket ... a lot of eggs and a lot of dollar bills."

Bob and Mike Bryan (Kansas City Explorers), the top-ranked doubles team in the world, will also play at Blue Fox Run Golf Course. The season is July 6-26. The schedule will be announced in two weeks.

Sampras and the Bryan brothers were among nine marquee players chosen, including Venus Williams (Philadelphia Freedoms), Anastasia Myskina (Springfield, Mo., Lasers), Martina Navratilova (Boston Lobsters), Todd Martin (Lobsters), Anna Kournikova (Sacramento Capitols), John McEnroe (New York Sportimes) and Martina Hingis (Sportimes).

This will be Shaughnessy's fourth season with the FoxForce but her first as a full-roster player. Because of other tournament commitments in previous years, she played only selected matches with the FoxForce.

"This year, Meghann will play all three weeks and the tournament if we make it," Wilson-Foley said. "She's one of the best players in the world right now. She'll play singles for us and doubles, too."

Last Friday, Shaughnessy upset third-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne 7-5, 6-4 in the Nasdaq-100 Open before losing to Sofia Arvidsson in the third round Sunday, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (5). McShea is No. 105 in doubles.

"[Shaughnessy's] been playing pretty well all season," Wilson-Foley said. "The fans like her. ... She's a good fit for us."

Davis Cup picks: Andy Roddick, James Blake and the Bryan twins were chosen by captain Patrick McEnroe to play for the United States against Chile in the Davis Cup quarterfinals next month.

It's the same quartet that beat Romania 4-1 in the first round in February. Roddick is ranked fourth and Blake ninth.

The best-of-five series will be played April 7-9 on grass courts in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The United States has 31 Davis Cup titles, but none since 1995.

Chile, which has never won the title and is in the quarterfinals for the first time since 1982, will have 19th-ranked Fernando Gonzalez and No. 43 Nicolas Massu in singles, with Paul Capdeville and Adrian Garcia also on the team.

Roddick in quarterfinals: Roddick beat qualifier Simon Greul 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals of the Nasdaq-100 Open in Key Biscayne, Fla.

Greul came into the tournament with one career victory on the ATP Tour, then beat three consecutive top-60 players.

No. 1 Roger Federer needed only 58 minutes to eliminate unseeded Dmitry Tursunov, 6-3, 6-3. Federer extended his record winning streak of 20 matches in Masters Series events.

Federer's opponent Thursday will be Blake, who rallied past No. 32 Juan Ignacio Chela 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. Federer beat Blake in the final at Indian Wells March 19.

"Obviously he can do about anything with a tennis racket in his hand," Blake said. "But on a given day, hopefully so can I."

Sampras Scheduled to Play Seven Matches
By Associated Press
3:45 PM PST, March 28, 2006

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Pete Sampras will play in seven matches for the Newport Beach Breakers of World TeamTennis in July, the league announced Tuesday.

Sampras will play six road matches and one at the Palisades Tennis Club, where the Breakers play home matches.

The Breakers made the 14-time Grand Slam singles champion the first choice in the marquee player portion of Tuesday's draft, obtaining the choice from the Houston Wranglers in exchange for an undisclosed financial consideration.

The dates of Sampras' appearances are expected to be announced in April, a team official said.

Aces will be seeing stars
By Kathleen Nelson

Pete Sampras and Anna Kournikova highlight the list of visitors to Dwight Davis Tennis Center this summer as part of the St. Louis Aces' World TeamTennis schedule. The Aces also gave their roster a hometown flavor by drafting St. Louis native Aleke Tsoubanos.

"We have the best coming to St. Louis," Aces general manager Dani Apted said. "And we have the best coming home to St. Louis. Aleke is the best player to come out of St. Louis in years."

The Aces have seven home matches in the WTT season, which runs July 6-26. Specific dates will be announced in the next two weeks.

Sampras, 34, is the all-time leader in Grand Slam singles titles with 14. He'll be making his first appearance in team tennis and will play for the Newport Beach Breakers.

Kournikova, 24, sold out Dwight Davis in 2003, when she appeared with the Kansas City Explorers. This time, she'll play for the Sacramento Capitals. Also scheduled to appear at Dwight Davis are Mark and Bob Bryan, the top-ranked doubles team on the ATP circuit, who will play for the Explorers.

Three of the four members of the Aces' roster will be familiar faces.

Tsoubanos, 23, played at Creve Coeur Racquet Club and graduated from Parkway Central in 2000, then attended Vanderbilt University.

"St. Louisans love to get behind a hometowner," Apted said. "She's so scrappy on the tour, and she'll play the same way for us. Fans will love her."

Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich are returning for their second season with the Aces. They are ranked 11th in doubles.

The lone newcomer is Maria Amelia Salerni, 22, a native of Argentina who is ranked 68th in doubles on the WTA Tour.

Breakers bring in Sampras

Newport Beach selects winner of 14 Grand Slam events after buying first pick from Houston in Tuesday's WTT draft.

By Dominic Perrone, Daily Pilot

A map of the U.S. held more insight into the possibility of the Newport Beach Breakers drafting Pete Sampras than the draft order.

Sitting near the bottom of the 12-team World Team Tennis draft was not ideal for drafting the owner of 14 Grand Slam titles. But being located 100 miles from Sampras' home in Palm Springs was an advantage no other team could offer.

Houston started with the top pick. But Newport Beach forked over undisclosed "financial considerations" to gain the top pick, then took Sampras on Tuesday.

Ramon Delgado, a two-year veteran of the Breakers, and doubles player Anastassia Rodionova were retained when the Breakers chose to protect them from being drafted by other teams.

Newport Beach, the 2004 WTT champion which lost in the finals last season, also drafted Tina Krizan, the No. 77 doubles player on the WTA Tour.

Rick Leach, the son of Breakers Coach Dick Leach, was also acquired by the Breakers via a trade with the Springfield Lasers.

Sampras, playing his first year in the WTT and for first time professionally since retiring in 2002, was the most coveted player in the draft. Sampras is scheduled to play in seven matches, one at Newport Beach and six on the road.

"We are very excited about having Pete on our team," Breakers' General Manager Jenna Silverman said. "It has been in the works for a few weeks. I think he's really excited. I think he wanted to play for the Breakers. The fact that it's going to be his first time back, the fans are really going to appreciate that. They're excited to have him back."

Dick Leach, who coached tennis for 23 years at USC and won four national titles, knows exactly how he plans to coach Sampras.

"I get out of the way," said Leach, who was once asked by Sampras father to teach 15-year-old Pete how to volley.

With Sampras on the team and the WTT Finals scheduled for Newport Beach, Leach is enjoying the pressure.

"That's the kind of pressure you want," said Leach, who coached his son at USC and is happy to be reunited. "I'm very excited to have Rick on the Breakers."

Rick Leach is partly to thank for Delgado joining the Breakers. The younger Leach suggested the team draft Delgado after seeing him on the ATP Tour.

"Three years ago, Rick told me 'Ramon Delgado is a great player. If you get a chance, draft him,' " Dick Leach said. "He's a great player and a great guy."

Delgado, the Most Valuable Player of the 2004 WTT Finals, has been earning fans since his arrival.

"Every year he has really grown," Silverman said. "He had his own little fan club. People come just to watch Ramon Delgado. He interacts well with the fans. He's a great team player, very dependable."

Sampras is not be the lone former ATP star scheduled to visit Newport Beach this season. John McEnroe, playing for the New York Sportimes, is slated to play a match at Palisades Tennis Club, the Breakers' home court. It's McEnroe's only scheduled appearance of the season for the Sportimes.

"[McEnroe] was in Newport Beach and the fans really liked him," Silverman said of the five-time U.S. Open champion known for his brash court behavior. "Everybody likes a little controversy in tennis."

The schedule for the WTT season will be released in April Silverman said.

Other marquee players drafted in the WTT were Venus Williams, No. 2 by the Philadelphia Freedoms (via a trade with Delaware), Martina Navratilova, No. 9 by the Boston Lobsters, and Anna Kournikova, No. 10 by the Sacramento Capitals.
