Epic movies, like brokeback mountain, are seldom found in the industry or worthy for the mainstream viewer. As often as I have watched the clips of this movie, I always find something more to it. For one, the gay stuff doesn't enter the picture for me, only the dimension of the highest love I have ever witnessed in life or on film.

Sampras wins big in return

May 3, 2007

BOSTON (AP) -- Pete Sampras routed Petr Korda 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round of the Champions Cup on Thursday, the 14-time major winner's first tournament in nearly five years.

In the first match, John McEnroe beat Tim Mayotte 6-1, 7-5. But the night belonged to Sampras, who hadn't played in a competitive match since beating Andre Agassi in the 2002 U.S. Open final.

"It was fun -- it was nice playing in the crowd," Sampras said. "I felt excited walking out there with a nice ovation. This is why I decided to play."

The 35-year-old Sampras, who will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in July, didn't touch a racket for nearly three years before picking up the sport again last summer to get in better shape.

He first played in sporadic exhibition matches and in the World Team Tennis league before deciding to pick up his training following an exhibition with four-time Grand Slam champ Jim Courier, who organizes the senior tour.

"Playing against a former great player got my juices going," Sampras said. "So I did some thinking and (decided) to play Jim's event. Maybe play against some of the former greats, just get my juice going with a little more at stake."

Though he was a bit older than the last time he took center court -- at the U.S. Open -- he still looked like the Sampras of old in his senior tour debut. His booming serve topped 130 mph, his forehand was precise and he was as aggressive as ever.

"I was playing well before I came over here," Korda said. "But this was just too good for me. I knew he was going to come hard. If he's going to show up for something big like this, he's going to come ready."

Using a larger racket than he did in his prime, Sampras overpowered Korda from the start. After dropping just one game in the first set, Sampras won five of the final six games of the second to sweep the match.

He ended the match with an ace Korda had no chance of catching.

"Serving is one shot that when I picked up the racket a year ago that was pretty natural," Sampras said. "It was still there."

According to Courier, McEnroe, Mayotte and Korda, Sampras has more than just his serve left and could make serious run at this year's Wimbledon.

"The guy is a master on grass," McEnroe said. "Roger (Federer) would say he'd play him, but he'd be concerned."

Still, Sampras said there's no way he'll seek an exemption for one more shot at Wimbledon, an event he won seven times.

"I wouldn't play Wimbledon just to play -- I would play to win," he said. "There needs to be a reason to come back and there really isn't a reason for me to come back."

Sampras rules out return

After dominating Petr Korda 6-1 6-2 on his seniors tour debut and first competitive match in nearly five years, Pete Sampras ruled out a return to Wimbledon.

"I wouldn't play Wimbledon just to play -- I would play to win," the 35-year-old American told the AP. "There needs to be a reason to come back and there really isn't a reason for me to come back."

Sampras, who won a record 14 Grand Slam titles and seven Wimbledon crowns during his years as a professional, had no trouble dispatching of the 1998 Australian Open winner Korda in the Boston event.

"It was fun -- it was nice playing in the crowd," Sampras said. "I felt excited walking out there with a nice ovation. This is why I decided to play."

Sampras said that playing against old rival and four-time Grand Slam winner Jim Courrier in an exhibition match inspired him to join the Champions Series, which is organised by Courrier.

"Playing against a former great player got my juices going. So I did some thinking and [decided] to play Jim's event. Maybe play against some of the former greats, just get my juice going with a little more at stake."

Korda acknowledged that Sampras' superior firepower - with a serve that reached upwards of 130 mph - was too much for the 39-year-old Czech.

"I was playing well before I came over here," Korda said. "But this was just too good for me. I knew he was going to come hard. If he's going to show up for something big like this, he's going to come ready."

"Serving is one shot that when I picked up the racquet a year ago that was pretty natural," Sampras said. "It was still there."

After Sampras' impressive debut several Champions Series competitors suggested the man who is considered by many to be the greatest grass-court player of all time could have a serious go at this year's All England Club and four-time defending champion Roger Federer.

"The guy is a master on grass," said three-time Wimbledon champ John McEnroe. "Roger would say he'd play him, but he'd be concerned."

Nothing old about Pete's game
May 05, 2007 12:00am

RETIRED tennis champion Pete Sampras turned back the clock yesterday to blitz Petr Korda in his first tournament in almost five years.

The 14-time major winner routed Czech Korda 6-1 6-2 in the Champions Cup seniors event in Boston.

"I felt excited walking out there with a nice ovation. This is why I decided to play," Sampras said after his first competitive match since beating Andre Agassi in the 2002 US Open final.

The 35-year-old Sampras didn't touch a racquet for nearly three years before picking up the sport again midway through last year.

He first played in exhibition matches and in the World Team Tennis league before deciding to pick up his training.

He still looked like the Sampras of old in his senior tour debut. His booming serve topped 209km/h, his forehand was precise and he was as aggressive as ever.

According to John McEnroe, Sampras has more than just his serve left and could make a serious run at this year's Wimbledon.

"The guy is a master on grass," McEnroe said. "Roger (Federer) would say he'd play him, but he'd be concerned."

But Sampras said there was no way he'd seek an exemption for one more shot at Wimbledon, an event he won seven times.

Sampras Crushes Korda in Senior Tennis Debut

Posted on May 4, 2007

Pete Sampras did not disappoint in his senior tour debut Thursday night at the Boston stop on the Outback Champions Tour, blowing past former Australian Open winner Petr Korda 6-1, 6-2 for a 1-0 start in round robin play.

"It was great to get back out there and compete," said Sampras, using a larger racquet than in his days competing on the ATP Tour. "I felt excited walking out there to a nice ovation in front of a large crowd. I've had some trouble with Petr in the past, but felt I was able to play real well on this surface."

Sampras was 12-5 career versus the Czech in their ATP days, most notably knocked out of the 1997 US Open by Korda in a fifth-set tiebreak.

"I was playing well before I came over here," Korda said. "But Pete was just too good for me. I knew he was going to come hard. If he's going to show up for something big like this, he's going to come ready."

In the other match on the day, John McEnroe beat Tim Mayotte 6-1, 7-5, with Mayotte making his senior tour debut after Mats Wilander was forced to withdraw from the event with back spasms.

Mayotte didn't get official word he was replacing Wilander until early in the afternoon and got off to a sluggish start, losing the first five games.

"I felt like I was in control," McEnroe said. "I felt like I could step it up if I needed to. At 5-4, I felt I should have put it away, 6-4."

Scheduled for Friday in Boston are Todd Martin vs. Wayne Ferreira, Jim Courier vs. Pat Cash, Sampras vs. Mayotte, and McEnroe vs. Korda.

Dammit I still get pissed off when I think about that match

Had he beaten Korda his path to the title would have been Bjorkman in the quarters, Rusedski in the semis and Rafter in the final. What a wasted opportunity

Watching his matches against Korda were so nerve wrecking its great to hear he spanked him good

Yes, I remember that Pete was leading 3-0 in the fifth set! And lost 7-6(4) 5-7 6-7(2) 6-3 6-7(3)... I gave you a link from that match in "videos" section.
