How/Why did you become a fan of David Ferrer?

I was wondering how all of you became a fan of him. For me, it was his match at this years Australien Open against David Nalbandian. I had never heard of him before that match and I was sooo impressed by his play. He was totally giving it to David in the first 3 sets and IMO, it was a shame that he wasn´t able to come through in the end. I started to follow him more closely after that and I liked him more and more every day. Now he´s one of my favourite players, especially because of his amazing fighting spirit (one just has to think about his unbelievable comeback against Gaudio at the French Open).

Re: How/Why did you become a fan of David Ferrer?

To be completely honest, first, i hated David
But it wasn't his fault at all! As i'm a huge fan of Gaston , i was upset by what happened in RG this year, but it was only GG's fault, he said so and i know David didn't do anything bad... But it was like that, in my head he was linked with a bad memory...

But i saw him in Stuttgart, first i didn't even want to take a pic of him but i was impressed by his work, i mean he trained all the time, from morning to evening and he deserves respect for that
After that, i started to be interrested on his play and my affection for him grew up naturally. Now that his coach recognises me and seems to have sympathy for me, i guess i love their team even more...

Re: How/Why did you become a fan of David Ferrer?

Erm... I have no idea why actually. I just fancied (bad choice of diction but anyway) Spaniards in general. I moderate a Spanish Tennis community on LiveJournal so I kinda automatically started caring about David. And I really liked him when I saw him play against Rafael in Miami this year I was impressed. (And I also liked his long-sleeved shirts )

Then I went to Montreal this year, and saw him play doubles with Gasquet. <333 And he was real nice to me after the match. He gave me an autograph (lol I was like one of the only 3 people who asked him ) and such. Now I reaaalllly like him.

I saw him this year in Viña del Mar in a mall and he felt shamed because I knew him ... He was very nice that day

Re: How/Why did you become a fan of David Ferrer?

Like bavaria, David first impressed me in the AO. Then I saw him play his first round match at Wimby this year and as well as some lovely tennis- he made me laugh the way he kept muttering to himself in Spanish nearly the whole time! I've just come back from Bercy where I watched him play a really tight match against Max and his feisty attitude and lovely forehand really sold me on him. Oh- and he's not bad looking either ;-)

David was embarrassed because you knew who he was (recognized him)?

For me, I first saw him practicing shirtless at Cincy 2004 and thought he was Feliciano Lopez until I saw his face. So I decided to go to his 1st round match, he played against Paradorn Srichaphan, it was a 3 setter night thriller. I was really impressed with how hard he fought and I've been a fan ever since. But I'm much too shy to talk to him or even Javi his coach.

That's too bad i'm shy myself but Javi is really sweet and friendly For David, my new goal is to talk to him directly in 2006! I didn't dare in Stuttgart cause his face was very "closed" and in Bercy i saw him in his hotel, so i couldn't annoy him...

I got an * Au revoir* from him in Bercy- which was very sweet- but next time maybe I'll try and speak to him for a little longer!

Re: How/Why did you become a fan of David Ferrer?

I admit my feelings for David are very similar to Elea's. I really did not like him at first - he kept on beating the players that I liked!!!!! However - at the Hamburg Masters' this year I became more and more impressed at the amount of work he puts in - he was always on the practice courts longer than everyone else - even in the cold and rain (and it's always cold and wet in Hamburg ) He has a feisty attitude and an amazng fighting spirit which I have great respect for.

I spoke to him for the first time properly in Madrid this year - as I was staying in the Players' Hotel and it seemed that wherever I was, he was......whether it was in the lift, on the stairs, in the Business Centre using the Internet, or at adjoining tables in the Breakfast Room - we both kind of laughed about it after a few days!! He has a lovely smile too!!

David's learning French now?

Actually, Javi spoke to me in Cincy this year - I threw a ball to him that Igor Andreev had hit out of the court during practice. He said thanks so I said 'de nada' back and quickly went back to my seat.

That´s really funny, as if you two were mentally connected to each other. David seems to be a very ambitous person and it´s great that he improved soo much during the season and I hope that he can keep it up next year. I was also at the Hamburg TMS but unfortunately, he already lost in the first round and I didn´t get to see him. Well, maybe I will get the chance to see him next year, but I´ll take a blanket with me, that´s for sure.

Well I don't know if he's learning French or not- maybe he just assumed I was French because it was Paris ? not sure- but it was very nice anyway !

well he was playing with Gasquet and they talked quite a bit during the match, but I don't think Richie speaks Spanish....... so maybe David does speak a bit of French?

Re: How/Why did you become a fan of David Ferrer?

i first heard about him in 2002 (notably at the Spanish Masters when he beat Robredo) but didn't actually pay much attention to him until I met him in Stuttgart in 2003. He was so incredibly nice and humble, and his coach was very nice too. In 2004 I met him again at the Valencia tournament, and also in my local supermarket when I was living in Valencia and again he was so nice and very happy to talk. Likewise at Stuttgart in 2004, where he was still laughing about the supermarket thing. The last time I saw him was at AO this year...and the reason I like him so much is because he is just so nice and quiet and unassuming. Every time he sees me now he says hi and gives me kisses on the cheek as the spaniards do...he is just basically a very down to earth guy. Admittedly I haven't seen him since he's become so good, but hopefully the success and fame won't change him and he will continue to be the nice guy that he is. Look forward to seeing him at the Aus Open in January!!
