2013 Australian Open Round 2
January 16, 2013 - On Margaret Court Arena, fourth seed David Ferrer dropped a set to American lucky loser Tim Smyczek before lifting to post a 6-0, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory. The Spaniard, a semi-finalist in Melbourne two years ago (l. to Murray), made only 24 unforced errors compared to his opponent's 77. He came into the Australian Open in a rich vein of form, having triumphed at the Heineken Open in Auckland (d. Kohlschreiber) last week.
The 30-year-old Ferrer goes into a blockbuster third-round clash with 2006 finalist Marcos Baghdatis, after the Cypriot defeated Japan’s Tatsuma Ito 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in two hours and 13 minutes. The 27-year-old Baghdatis, who survived a five-set scare against Albert Ramos in the first round, knocked Ferrer out in Melbourne in five sets in the 2010 second round. That was his only win in four meetings with the Spaniard, though.
