Early Hardcourt Season 2010

Gael entered Johannesburg, Rotterdam and Marseille on hardcourt during this european winter. The draw of Jo'burg is out and it's a tournament for him if he's not injured http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2010/5012/mds.pdf

Re: Early Hardcourt Season 2010

I don't really see a reason why he should be tanking. (Plus I'm pretty sure Roger is not having any of it again )

Gael vs Josselin would be nice

Re: Early Hardcourt Season 2010

Sure, he has no reason to tank, a unique chance to get 250 cheap points and then he doesn't need to bother with those events for a while.
But he's made a really lame effort in so many events lately, even in bigger tournaments like Shanghai or Valencia, I'm always afraid he might tank. ^^

I read Nieminen is out, but I'm not sure if it's true.
Gaël just arrived in J'burg and already gave a press conference according to his Twitter, I'm curious about the new hairstyle.

Re: Early Hardcourt Season 2010

I'd like to see Gael step it up in these events a lot more this year; for one thing winning is a good habit to be in, for another the knowledge that he does lose against lesser opposition just doesn't strike any fear into opponents he faces in bigger tournaments

Monfils to entertain at SA Open

Gael Monfils, "The Great Entertainer" is here to entertain, but the colourful, charismatic Frenchman also made it clear on Sunday after his arrival in Johannesburg for the South African Open that he means business.

The R3,75-million tournament's top seed at the Montecasino event which gets underway on Monday and the 12th-ranked world tennis player said under new coach Roger Rasheed he was employing a more professional approach, concentrating on planning his matches and employing a greater degree of tact and tenacity.

"Everyone keeps telling me I have the talent to win a grand slam tournament," added the 23-year-old Frenchman, "but that I need to show more resolve and resillience on the court. Well now I've started to try and achieve this under Roger's tough training."

The imposing, 6ft 4in Monfils, nevertheless, said he had no intention of abandoning his inherant spectacular and emotional showmanship.

"That is me," he added, "and I'm not going to change what comes naturally."

Although Monfils said Rasheed had not accompanied him to South Africa because of "personal problems", the rest of his support team was here and he was geared to vie for the R600 000 winner's prize at Montecasino and what would be surprisingly for a player of his talent only his third ATP title.

The obvious favourite for appeal and ability in the South African Open, Monfils opens his programme with a first-round game against seasoned Slovakian Dominik Hrabaty, who coincidentally also reached 12th as a best world ranking - but that was a matter of six years ago.

"It's a tough opening game," said Monfils about a match the tournament organisers have provisionally planned for Tuesday night, "But it it is a good test for me to settle down and find my feet in high altitude conditions."

(...) In between the business of improving his world ranking at Montecasino, the engaging Monfils said he would like to pursue his passion for soccer by viewing the imposing World Cup Stadium at Soccer City.

As for the controversial Thierry Henry handball that earned France a place in the tournament hosted by South Africa in June and July at the expense of Ireland, Monfils said most Frenchman regarded it as "just one of those things" and an instinctive action.

"What was he to do?" asked Monfils, "gone to the referee and told him he had handballed. He might have been lynched in France had he done it." - Sapa

Re: Early Hardcourt Season 2010

I could hardly follow the match with the livestream.

Quote:
Top seed Gael Monfils lost the toss and first two games before unleashing his service power to crush Dominik Hrbaty 6-2, 6-1 and reach the second round of the South African Open on Tuesday.
The 23-year Frenchman ranked 13 in the world was clearly stung by the early form of the veteran Slovak and lost just one of the remaining 13 games at the Montecasino entertainment centre in a leafy, upmarket northern suburb.
It was a floodlit match settled by serving with Monfils outstanding apart from an occasional double-fault blip while 32-year-old Hrbaty battled as his dream start swiftly transformed into a nightmare.
Long before the end of the first round tie the only issue was how long it would take Monfils to wrap up victory and the end came on 53 minutes and 36 seconds via a stinging first serve from the Switzerland-based Frenchman.
"I had a good game and hope to continue this form throughout the week as my ambition is to emulate compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and win the title," said Monfils.
"The altitude was not a big problem as I had two good days of practice and playing at night made it a little easier for me as there was less humidity," he added after a sweltering day in the South African financial capital.
Quote:
Top seed Gael Monfils of France dispatched Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty 6-2, 6-2 Tuesday to advance into the second round of the SA Tennis Open.
"I feel real good -- physically the shots were there and so was the head," said Monfils, who is ranked No. 12 in the world. "I was a bit worried about the altitude, playing so high above sea level, and I tightened my racket strings but it wasn't a problem.
"This is fast tennis because the ball travels faster at altitude. You come up to the net more. It's fun."

Re: Early Hardcourt Season 2010

6/4 7/5
This time I was able to watch and he was coming to the net and serve&volleying quite a lot in the 2nd set, it was fun. The start wasn't too bad either by his standards.

Lu now, they've never played before.

Shocking tennis against LaLo, shocking attitude, shocking everything. Go take some holidays wherever you want, Gaël, and come back when you remember how to hit a bloody forehand.
