Re: Indoors season 2009 - Kuala Lumpur

Yes, I watched bits of the livestream recording again before uploading it and he was a bit slow and not accurate at all, he must have been tired as hell. He would need to play extremely well to beat Denko anyway, and he was far, far away from that today, he looked flat in his attitude too, the whole match was blah.

Re: Fall tournaments 2009 - Tokyo

Does anybody know this Ilhan a little bit? I see his name everywhere lately, but I've never paid attention to what people say about his game.
They play tomorrow already, but I doubt there will be a livestream.

Re: Fall tournaments 2009 - Tokyo

I never heard about him Wawa is the first really dangerous player he might meet imo. Unless he pulls a DC
I like those tournaments where the Frenchies have a lot of chances to meet

Re: Fall tournaments 2009 - Tokyo

I only know about his story, there were some articles about him during the USO because he's the first Turkish player to have some success on the main tour:

But I have no idea how he plays and if he might be tricky for Gaël. Bashak probably knows.

Looks like an easy draw indeed, I just hope somebody will take care of Isner before the QF if Gaël makes it that far because I'm still not over the IW match.

Re: Fall tournaments 2009 - Tokyo

Quote:
TOKYO — Former world junior number one Gael Monfils fired down 15 aces in two sets to beat Marsel Ilhan of Turkey in the first round at the Japan Open tennis tournament on Monday.

The French fourth seed, playing in Tokyo for the first time, got off to a flying start with a three consecutive aces in the opening game before scoring a a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Monfils pulled off an early break forcing Ilhan to mis-fire an approach shot in the second game and never looked back afterward breaking the Turk in the last game of the both sets to finish off the 66-minute match.

"I served great. I tried to focus on my serve, because it's a little bit fast condition. I think I played right today. I didn't know what Ilhan is going to do, so I had to keep myself stronger to win in two sets," Monfils said.

After world number one Roger Federer and Britain's Andy Murray withdrew with injuries, Monfils sees "a big chance" to win the 1.2 million dollar event here.

"Even if Roger and Andy were here, it's the same. I can compete against them and win," said Monfils, ranked 13th.

"I'm pretty confident. I just have to take care of my fatigue, because of all those travels I had in these few weeks. But I'm playing great. I'm in good shape. I have a big chance to win," he added.

And:
Quote:
World number 13 Monfils, coming off his second career ATP Tour title in Metz, was never threatened by Ilhan but sportingly applauded him after a couple of audacious shots.

"It gave me a little confidence to win (in Metz) but it was not a big sensation for me," Monfils told reporters. "I'm pretty confident. I think a have a big chance to win this week."

U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, runner-up here last year, heads the field after world number one Roger Federer and third-ranked Andy Murray pulled out.

Monfils had tasted defeat in six finals since his breakthrough title in Sopot, Poland, in 2005 but insisted the statistics were misleading.

"I played (Ivan) Ljubicic when he was number three, I was 19," said Monfils. "I played (Andy Roddick) when he was two. I played Federer -- what can you do?"
