Re: Clay season 2008

Maybe he won't need to play the qualies, after all, he just needs two more withdrawals and Roddick hasn't pulled out yet. I thought Haas might withdraw too since he rarely plays there.

Re: Clay season 2008

I would only assume Haas will pull out, he looked really uncomfortable on clay, and in general against kunitsyn in Houston, even though the scoreline was pretty tight

Re: Clay season 2008

Haas is in the draw. Gaël is lucky Baggy retired then, it was close!

They have never played against each other. It will be tough, Verdasco had MP against Ferrer yesterday in Valencia. And Gaël has never done well in Monte-Carlo, so my expectations are not toooooo high. No pressure, Gaëlou, just do your best!

Re: Clay season 2008

Oh, new hairdo, it's been a long time!
I think I'll need a longer adaptation time for that one, Gaël, I'm not so sure about the cap...

Edit: The cap not only looks horrible, he also keeps fiddling with it, it's already getting on my nerves after 2 games.

Re: Clay season 2008

7-5 2-2, Verdasco is helping nicely so far... It's not pretty, but at least Gaël kept his head when Verdasco got the rebreak in the 1st set.

Gaël is not happy because he was hindered by a microphone on an important point.
But it wouldn't happen if he was not staying 250 m behind his baseline! It's worse than ever in that regard.

Re: Clay season 2008

What a last game! And I was afraid he might choke! He served it out in Sampras style.

Great job, Gaël!

Re: Clay season 2008

Nice win for Gael, it's going to make some wonder for his confidence.

It's true that he stays really far behind his baseline, but, unlike Richard, he's got the athleticism to make for it. But he really needs to play longer, wherever he is on the court, and that's his real problem for the moment. Many of his shots were way too short for this level.

But I was quite happy that he was so determined to go for the volley everytime he could. And his serve is working great, even if he doesn't vary it enough.

Good luck for the next round Gaelou

Re: Clay season 2008

I think Gael needs to stay closer just because it would make things much more easier for him. Especially since as of late he has had so many injures.

Re: Clay season 2008

Even with his lurking way too far behind the baseline, I enjoyed the way Gael played today. I find it hilarious that he can just lazily hold a rally from way back there, hitting short balls and yet retrieving good shots, and then out of nowhere he will just come up to the baseline or into the court and smack a winner. I know that sounds like he is just setting up the point but if you really pay attention, his amazing aggressive shots are quite random, and I LOVE IT. I can only imagine what it would be like if he stayed close to the baseline like, say, james blake.

Great match for Gael, glad I tivo'd it.
