Stan on clay courts 2016

With the Early Hard Court season finished, it's time for the ♪ "Most, wonderful time, of the yearrrrr!" ♪ That's right -- it's Clay Season, possibly Stan's most adept surface! Last year he won Roland Garros, but of course we won't see ahead of it for now. With I think 4 more tournaments before Roland Garros to play, how well do you think Stan will do?

Tournaments:
Monte Carlo - QF (180 points)
Madrid - R2 (10 points)
Rome - R4 (90 points)
Geneva - W (250 points)
Roland Garros - SF (720 points)
-------------------------------------
Total - 1250 out of 2325 points (~54%)

Re: Stan on clay courts 2016

There is one objective over the three masters:

#2 seed!

I know Stan can do it, Murray and Fed have more points to defend and Murray is doing awful. Make the finals of Monte-Carlo!

Re: Stan on clay courts 2016

Shocking development with Djokovic now out! I know it is not wise for Stan fans to look so forward...although maybe it is? In the past tournaments there is a feeling of low expectation some yet the outcome is still relatively sub-par, while the last time that Djokovic lost and made Stan the highest seed was in Dubai and he won it. I personally think Djokovic's loss would pump up the top players -- Murray, Nadal, Federer, even Raonic -- to really push for that title. I wonder if that would be enough motivation to try and win this as he did win against Murray (Monte Carlo 2013), Nadal (Rome 2015), Thiem (Rome 2015), Federer (Rome 2015), Simon (Roland Garros 2015) and Raonic (Monte Carlo 2014) in their last meetings on clay, to name a few. I am actually a bit annoyed that Stan is not considered a main favorite (even though Stan may not want the pressure of one ), when he won this in 2014, and consistency wise is actually close to both Murray and Nadal, who both had early losses in the March Masters as he did (although Nadal did get to the SF of IW but almost beaten in the R16). Let's see how Stan handles this opportunity.

Re: Stan on clay courts 2016

Here I've calculated the live race to no2 seed in RG:

Murray: 6665 (a little higher, I'm not sure what's Murray best 6 score, maybe an extra 90?)
Federer: 6800 (again a little higher)
Stan: 6000

Will update this as we go if there's still a hope.

Nadal is way back on <4000 so Stan safe in top 4 I guess.

If Stan beat Murray in the semis, and Fed in the finals:
Murray: ~6935
Federer: ~7310
Stan: 6910

So if Stan were to win MC the at worst that is the standings, if he won and Murray lost to Raonic/Paire, and Federer lost to Tsonga/RBA then Stan is primed to reach #2 for the first time ever?

@zjtennis also is it just me or did Stan look more cheerful than normal today?

Re: Stan on clay courts 2016

@Arsenalex I dunno, haha. All I could say is that during his match against Kohli, he seemed to be annoyed even when he's leading. It's like he wanted to be his best in his performance. I feel he seems motivated for this season personally. I will say though the next match would be a great test. Round of 16's are always the trickiest for Stan for some reason, but whenever he gets past there it seems only the likes of Fedalovic are the ones who could stop him IMO (facing Nadal in almost every QF recently doesn't help going forward though ). If he gets past through Simon, there might be a bit of nail-biting what will happen to him, but he seems to be in a new zone whenever he gets to a quarters, IMO.

I just liked his attitude better. When he won, he was smiling for once, even when he won RG he didn't smile so much. I get this feeling, weird I know, like Stan felt 'cool' after winning a slam, he was one of the best and he began to show no more emotion against lesser players, as if he's superior to them

Stan certainly looks comfortable back on the clay, and concentrating better too. 6-1 first set, hopefully no let up which I feel there will be

Re: Stan on clay courts 2016

6-1 6-2 against Simon, nice. Faces Nadal next, which while of course is hard still seems doable as shown by Thiem. Of course Stan isn't known to be a monster in BPs but he usually is decent at them. I just hope Stan is ready for this match as IMO it is very winnable.

Re: Stan on clay courts 2016

@zjtennis slightly off topic but do you also realise every day the bottom half is playing before the top half? Murray played his matches at 8:30PM (my time) and 7PM. Stan played at 7PM and 8:30. Nadal at 8:30 and 8:30. Meanwhile, Federer played all his matches around midnight my time and so did Djokovic.

Now yesterday schedule was like, Murray, Raonic, Wawrinka, Nadal, Monfils, Federer, Granollers, Tsonga and today it's Murray-Raonic, Wawrinka-Nadal, Federer-Tsonga, Monfils-Granollers

I actually noticed too that Andy and Raonic are playing 1st match. Odd to say the least. I'm +8 UTC -- what is your time zone? I get Granollers-Monfils playing last but the other scheds do seem weird.

Re: Stan on clay courts 2016

All I can say is that I just hope Stan doesn't meet Nadal in the QF again in Madrid -- I mean, come now! Wonder what happened to the FH; I mean I get it was a bit off a times but not that off. The most surprising was the BH. It didn't hit the baseline out -- it hit almost out of the stands.

Re: Stan on clay courts 2016

I know Kyrgios is a hard draw in the first round, but if Almagro defeated him, not sure why can't he...didn't defend that well. Any thoughts about his tactics this latest match? I thought he didn't construct the points that well and just stayed in the baseline too much IMO. With no Nadal in his side of the draw I really don't know what he's particularly placid in this one.
