Re: Where are we all from?

so..the first picture is that of a typical food centre...or what we call a hawker centre. lotsa lotsa stalls selling FOOOODDD!!!!! that's why we say the singaporean pasttime is eating. in the past few years..lots of air-conditioned food courts have sprung up..but the prices are higher and the food suckier...give me a hawker centre any day

2nd pic's from the botanics garden again... just went this morning to take the pic of this talipot palm in bloom. it takes 30 to 80 years to mature. these two are 79 years old or something. and they bloom for a year then die...so if u're heading this way...come this year hahahahahaha......

and pffft..it just started raining again...

For some reason people up here don't talk about São Paulo very much, and I don't think many people realize it's even bigger than New York! So thanks for those great pics! Looks beautiful...

Yes, you sure, a few peoples know how big is São Paulo. Of course it's not beautiful like Rio de Janeiro but I enjoy so much to live here.

Re: Where are we all from?

So this is where I´m coming from.
First, the town where I was born and grew up: Idar-Oberstein in the west of Germany. It´s a small town but quite famous in Germany because of it´s gem/jewellery industry. They used to find lots of precious stones there, but when the mines were empty, many people migrated to Brasil to search for stones there. Although the stones come from elsewhere now, designing and factoring of jewellery is still alive there. The city has a great museum dedicated to precious stones.

The third picture shows the most famous sight of the city: A church build in a rock! It was built there because in the middle ages a knight threw his wife from the top of that rock because she betrayed him. In regret he swore to build a church in the place where they found the corpse :shiver:

The fourth picture shows the amethyst stone where I got my username from.

Re: Where are we all from?

The town where I went to University: Wuerzburg in the south of Germany, in Bavaria. The town is absolutely lovely, located in a valley and surrounded by vineyards. It has hundreds of historic buildings and churches. I was married there.

The second picture shows the castle on a hill over the city.
Number 4 is a historic building of the University.
Number 3 is a modern building of the University. It always rained through the flat roof, so they had to put buckets everywhere when there was heavy rain. Ironically the historic buildings were far better (and needed less repair) than the modern ones!
Number 5 shows the street where many cafes and pubs frequented by University students are located (this pic is especially for Seb )

Re: Where are we all from?

Finally where I live now: a very small town in the west of Germany between Duesseldorf and Moenchengladbach, not far away from the Netherlands.
It´s surrounded by fields which you can see on the second picture. The statue on the third picture stands for the theater-festival we have every summer.
Because Duesseldorf is the biggest city nearby, I added a picture of Duesseldorf at night and of modern architecture in Duesseldorf (buildings designed by Frank Gehry).

I love those 3 storeys buildings next to each other and stone walkway/road/etc. It gives me the feeling of spacious but not too far away from other people.

Here in North America, in most cities, you either have a downtown area filled with high rise or crumbling old structures or a suburban area where there are single houses with fences that you never run into your neighbour. e.g. the people lived next to mine on one side, I had never run into them since they moved in last summer.
