Re: Sculpting a victory: A Pygmalion Slogan for the Australian Open! 3R v Stepanek

I am going to make an allnighter for my last exam before the next one, so I might as well do it while watching Nole.

I went to go check what the injury was because I remember he pulled out of Brisbane when he was meant to face Hewitt, he had an eye infection, so he could be 100% by now.

Obviously his net-rushing game won't be as good as it was on grass last year, so it's definitely a better surface for Nole and I'm hoping he won't take this match lightly because Radek played pretty well until Nole really got firing in that match too.

Novak's third on Rod Laver, play starts at 11am in Melbourne, so 1am CET, I'd say maybe 1hr30mins for each womens match plus 30 minutes warmups etc, so maybe 4am

I know how that feels. During USO in order for me to see any match I'd have to adjust when I slept. Matches would start at midnight my time

I worry that Kerber vs Keys and Li vs Cirstea won't be fast ones. Especially Li and Cirstea match. Nole is scheduled to practize from 11am - 12:30pm

Oh I see what you mean. Well I think Keys v Kerber will be longer. Li v Cirstea matches aren't very long, either Sorana comes and hits everything in or out, same goes with Li, but Li is the better one when she's missing. French Open last year was a good example, an average Li beat Sorana 2 and 1. Keys v Kerber could go three sets, Keys is a choker so she wont be able to close out the win if she gets close, but I have a feeling she might not even get that far but we'll see

Re: Sculpting a victory: A Pygmalion Slogan for the Australian Open! 3R v Stepanek

I looked at the stats in AO after 2 rounds. We would think Nole will be the leader in return serve but NO! He was not in top 20 in first serve return points won and 20th in second serve return. But, he is 4th (84%) in first serve points won and 1st (79% ) in second serve.

Berankis is second in the second serve list with only 66%. And Kohlscreiber's 91% is best in first serve points won while DelPo 2nd with 86%

Nole has better quality opponents in Mathieu and Harrison than Mannarino and Benji Becker for DelPo plus Starcis and Weintraub for Kohlscreiber.

I don't really trust stats, they're so often wrong.

Service stats are winning percentage. On the other hand, return stats - a sum of pts won, so they are in favor of players who went through long matches. It's always puzzling me why they use two very different numbers. (ATP don't) It may be redundant over a single match, since serve/return % are mutually related. But over multiple opponents/matches, % is a far better indicator of which players are good in return games. Who cares if player A won more pts on return in a couple of five setters than player B did in two straightforward three setters. One can say aces/DFs lists also have the same issues to some extent.

Round1
Nole 38.4% (33/86) on return: 27.6% (16/58) on 1st, 60.7% (17/28) on 2nd
PHM 19.5% (15/77) on return: 16.3% (8/49) on 1st, 25.0% (7/28) on 2nd

Round2
Nole 51.1% (46/90) on return: 43.9% (25/57) on 1st, 63.7% (21/33) on 2nd
Ryan 14.3% (8/56) on return: 14.7% (6/41) on 1st, 13.3% (2/15) on 2nd

I like it, even though it's based on small sample size.
