Also the English were always on the verge of jumping into the war on the side of the south and might well have had the north lost at Gettysburg..

Probably, this period was one of the most vicious in U.S. history. Brooks from South Carolina attacked Sumner on the senate floor and beat him unconscious with a gold headed cane. He continued to beat sumner even after he was unconscious and ceased only when his cane broke. Meanwhile another congressman held would be intervenors at bay with a pistol.
