Ro-Ru stream is excellent. Am quite enjoying it - always like watching Safin.

Tomas - Gilles at 1.30 too. I shall start Sexy - SB but expect to quickly lose interest.

Sexy

OK - while I'm going to go out for an hour - need to go to the Post Ofice and the Bank, and a few other things in town, and might as well do it now - the walk may calm my (still irritated) nerves - but will be back soon

Looks horrible than I thought.
I wonder how they can fix them all just for a day.

Ye gods! They can't let people sit in there! They must postpone the tie surely.

I just saw the pictures too. It looks like the upper part of the stand just flipped over or what?? It reminds me of Domino Day

Re: 2009 Davis Cup Cheering Thread: World Group First Round vs. Spain

That stand is ridiculous - looks totally unsafe for the spectators. They should move the tie indoors surely Or perhaps do a Sweden/Israel, and play it with no spectators?

Seems the lovely Mr. Obradovic is not so happy - this is from Nole's official webaite:-

We’re spending more times at the meetings than with the players. Everything that has been happening around this match is unexpected. First we didn’t have enough training because of the weather conditions, and now the safety of audience and players is endangered not because of the courts but because of the stands, and the start of the match is delayed. Niki Pilic hasn’t experienced this in his career. We’ll see at the meeting whether we can use training grounds and share the additional terms with the Spaniards, and then try to find clay court somewhere near Benidorm, so we can work undisturbed. All this has been disrupting our preparation for the tie, but that’s tennis, that’s sport.

Oh god. I dont understand why they had to build a new stadium for the tie?? I thought Spain was all about the clay courts...so couldnt they have just used one of the million clay courts available in the country?? This really sucks for the players who have to rush to IW afterwards! They would have no time to readjust to hard courts and different weather conditions. Ugh.

Certainly just as well this isn't happening in Serbia - we'd never hear the end of it otherwise.

The Spanish tennis association RFET announced at midnight local time that play for Friday would not take place, and on Friday morning officials from the RFET and their technical advisers held a news conference in which they said continuing strong winds were preventing their technical staff starting repair work. This in turn prevents any definitive announcement about play for the rest of the weekend, although practice schedules for Friday afternoon on the practice court at the Terra Mitica park were announced.

The weather forecast for the day does envisage the winds easing, and organisers are hopeful that repair work can begin in the early afternoon.

Davis Cup rules allow for play on up to five days, so play on Monday or even Tuesday is theoretically possible. The rules also allow for a certain amount of flexibility of scheduling, so three matches on Saturday or Sunday are possible, although with Novak Djokovic due to play in three matches and daylight only until just after six o’clock in the evening, it seems unlikely that this will happen.
I don't like the option of three matches on one day at first then even it seems impossible.

Re: 2009 Davis Cup Cheering Thread: World Group First Round vs. Spain

Horrible situation. All the 8 players involved have to go to IW too. Nole are the Spaniards are luckier as they got bye in the first round. But Tipsy and Troicki and Zimonjic have to play right away.
Hmmm....poor emergengy control by the organizer

It seems like they picked the one city in Spain without them. I didn't really follow it at the time, but I think a lot of people were wondering why they picked Benidorm for a March tie. Hopefully, they can play tomorrow.

Re: 2009 Davis Cup Cheering Thread: World Group First Round vs. Spain

Must say I'd assumed Benidorm had full facilites in situ. Obviously they were desperate to play outdoors on clay but was there nothing suitable in existence in the whole of southern Spain? Why not use the bull ring in Seville rather than go to the trouble of building a whole new stadium?
