It has been a very news worthy DC weekend. And the vast majority of the news hasn't exactly been positive.

The ITF officials on site will meet with the teams tomorrow to decide whether to push the tie back to Monday or play doubles and reverse singles on Sunday.

From tennis.com ticker: http://tennis.com/news/ticker.aspx
The Davis Cup tie between Spain and Serbia will not begin on Friday as scheduled after heavy winds overnight made the stadium unfit for use. Some of the stands have been blown away and the "whole stability" of the structure has been affected, said an ITF spokesperson.

The opening singles matches, David Ferrer vs. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal vs. Janko Tipsarevic, will take place on Saturday. Officials and team members will meet on Friday to decide whether to hold both the doubles and reverse singles on Sunday, or extend the tie by one day and play the doubles on Sunday and the reverse singles on Monday.

Djokovic is slated to play both singles and doubles for Serbia, meaning that he could have to play two matches in one day if the doubles and reverse singles were both held on Sunday.

Re: 2009 Davis Cup Cheering Thread: World Group First Round vs. Spain

I have no words for the sheer f***ing incompetence and stupidity of anyone who planned to play an outdoor tournament in Europe at this time of year, and then obviously didn't even check that the stucture was safe enough to withstand the kind of weather that we habitually get at this time of year Not only am I on a personal basis (I took today of work - I can't take Monday so I won't be able to watch it ), but it's so unfair on the players who have to move on to IW soon afterwards for an important tournament.

Likewise! I've just spent 2 hours cleaning the house ready for our guests and then log on to see this I think it is taking a preference for clay a little too far.

That stadium looked like it would collapse when a bird would poop on it anyway. I liked the bullfight arena more, plus it was being used for better purposes then. But I'm afraid the weather is even worse in Madrid. Man, this sucks What if it rains tomorrow or Sunday?

Edit: Just checked the forecasts, it's not gonna rain anymore.

Why am I not surprised about the badly-built stadium? Some friends of mine went to see Spain v Argentina DC semi final a few years ago. They told me the stadium was so tacky and badly-built that the staircases swayed , and they were scared to move around As I've said several times here already - f*** the b****** Spanish

Re: 2009 Davis Cup Cheering Thread: World Group First Round vs. Spain

The Davis Cup is cursed:

Israel and Sweden are playing in an empty arena with only cops watching inside and lots of protestors outside.
Spain and Serbia are playing in a ready-to-collapse stadium under hurricane like weather. Maybe they are going to play in an empty arena too. I suppose the arena is safer not having to bear the weight of like 40000 spectators? Or they should move into an indoor stadium immediately to get rid of bad weather and fragile stadium. But then that would immediately favor the Serbs and Spain might not want it.
In addition to all these ill news, we have an ill Andy Murray, injured Roger Federer, and Nalbandian, Del Potro, Soderling, whatever pulling out. USA got to be cursing about Fed's absence in what would originally be an epic tie already. More cursing to come for other ties?

No, we are gonna kick out Poland and win the next tie too So we could play Serbia in Belgium in the future

I'm very curious if they can fix the stands just like that btw. It has to be safety approved tomorrow I wouldn't set a foot on it...

Indeed, from a very practical and safety point of view, they should really move indoor immediately.

But of course they won't, because an indoor stadium wouldn't be in Spain's favour at all

Watching Safin - Crivoi at present - now can he manage to lose this?

Having found Murray's page and quickly lapsed into a coma, JP is wondering if Safin is on Twitter too. 'Now that would probably be worth reading'
