OK, here it is. It was a little difficult because there is a lot of slang in it
, so you´ll see a lot of things between brackets.
He has got a site, too http://www.sergioroitman.com.ar/
Better tennis player than pianist
Chucho´s executioner on Monday, studied piano until 12 years old. Confessed ‘metalero’ (rock metal fan), says he never lost ¡against Nadal!

Year 1992. A Saturday, 11 am. The audition was in Promúsica (a musical instruments store)
. “If I passed, I would have been awarded (scholarship?)
and the projection started there. It´s something big going in there”, Sergio Roitman explains. Instead of going to the piano audition, he chose to do what his tennis professor asked for and give something like a tennis exhibition for kids. “That was the turning point”. Because Sergio Roitman, the surprisingly defeater of José Acasuso Monday night, should have been a musician. “I studied classical piano from 6 to 12. I should have been soloist/classical pianist. My old man, Hugo, plays very good. I started late with tennis and ‘me cebé’ (something like ‘I got exited/enthusiastic’)
My parents already sold the last piano”.
As a teenager, the piano lessons ended, but the musician didn´t die. “It´s weird, because I´m ‘metalero’ till death. At 15 I wore black, long hair, went to concerts: Hermética, Malón, Horcas… I hung out with an older group of friends. Now I continue being heavy, but I incorporated little things: Morcheeba, Skay, something more calmed. Press play and that´s it.”
In the free time, ‘Escopeta’ plays drums. “I did the mimic and one day I told my old man: I want my drums! We went to a factory ‘en la loma del culo’ ( literally, in the butt´s hillock It´s a common expression that means something is very far away)
and I bought it. I put them together and I already played, without studying anything. I´m left handed to play it. I like a lot music, I enjoy going to a pub and listening to a live band…” With the trips, he had the privilege of listening to Judas Priest “in a little boat as big as this room. I saw Scorpions in little theaters. Pursuing a musical career? I don´t know, I want to do many things when I retire…”
Today he takes care of other things: “I´m partner with a friend, Hernán, who is the one that makes me the shirts”. Yes, those ones that export Argentine symbols. “I go anywhere with the cow and they tell you: “Man, that´s cool” The design firm know what they do. (he says ‘la tiene atada’, which literally means ‘having it tied’, which is used when someone is in control or know very well what he does, etc)
” The brand´s name is NoBrand (nobrand.com.ar) and the icons are a cow, the mate, Che (Guevara), a choripan… “There are like 60, the old ‘bondi’(bus)
, Borges, Sandro, the Obelisk. We went to have dinner with Sabatini, I told her and she liked the idea: we´ll make her with the typical curls and Vilas with the headband”.
Despite that, tennis is what matters. After years fighting in challengers, it seems that at last he made the big step at 27. “I had no support as junior, I was not good enough to receive it anyway. But I never doubted about myself. There´s a very special person (I prefer not to mention her) that supported me through everything. She and her family; mine and my ex coach, Alejandro Lombardo. Very few people in tennis worth it (it´s a little difficult to translate this I hope you understand it…)
-What was missing?
-I think the tennis was always present, I changed my physic. I was missing a little of experience/wisdom. In challengers, such anxiety to go out and play distorts a little the game; if you don´t leave quickly and I didn´t, you are done. Today my tennis is for a high level.
Playing with Nadal.
Roitman has got an enviable head to head against… Rafael Nadal. “I´m 2-0 against him. I defeated him in a final in Cherbourg, France; I think that Rafa was 8”, he jokes. “The other one was in the qualification to Mallorca, he was 15. The guy was depressed because he came from losing two finals. Kid, what´s wrong? ‘I´m afraid of not being able of winning finals’, he told me. But ‘tomatelas, flaco’ (I´m sure there must be a similar expression in English…, in this case it´s something like saying stop whining, stop exaggerating, etc )
