Re: Thomaz Bellucci

Great job Thomaz. The hard training prior to the event in Auckland is paying off with two three set wins. Will be interesting to see how he goes against Montanes or Giraldo. Thanks for the pics Shurat.

Re: Thomaz Bellucci

That crucial backhand volley miss on BP in the 1st game of the 2nd was really painful. It was a long rally and he fought so hard to get the position. That point might have changed the whole picture. Can he ever improve his net game? *sigh* And I'm not sure how far he can get away with this passive game style. Consistency always has been one of the biggest problem of his game, but it doesn't seem any better in this way and his fitness is still in doubt, imo.

Sorry, I'm in a bit gloomy mood tonight. Hope he gets some luck tomorrow.

Re: Thomaz Bellucci

Damn but Santi has started the year in good form and a QF showing on hard isn't too bad for Thomaz. At least this will also give him a couple of additional days to prepare for the Aus Open.

Re: Thomaz Bellucci

Wimbledon rematch, but I'd be fine with Thomaz making the 3rd round. Hopefully he can beat Istomin. Good luck!

+1

7-5, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3
Not a convincing scoreline, but a win is a win. Next match, vs Hernych

Re: Thomaz Bellucci

I watched a bit of this match. First two sets were good for Thomaz. You could tell he was the better player and was overpowering Mello from the baseline. Near the end of the first set he nearly blew it when he messed up three easy putaways at the net but kept his cool and held. Then at the start of the second he was very unlucky not to break straightaway when Mello hit the ball and got the netcord and bounced over. He didn't seem too concerned though and it was Mello who was the angry one being upset at some of the calls and hitting the ball out of the stadium when he was broken at the end of the first. The match seemed likely to be a three setter for him so I left after the second and was surprised that it was still going on so I returned midway through the 4th and it was a different Thomaz. He wasn't as solid from the baseline, hitting a few errors and second serve seemed weak. Then an umpire's call went against him which he got upset about and then not long after that he put himself in a good position in a rally and then the rally was stopped after a lineswoman corrected her own call. The original call was woeful as the ball was easily in. Thomaz was also understandably having a few troubles with people moving in the stands in between points. It was ridiculous and even the umpire was beginning to get frustrated. This continued until the end of the match. He also kept using drop shots that were having no effect on the hardcourts and he wasn't in any physical discomfort. Once he broke in the fifth his serving stepped up late in the fifth when it was needed on critical points. Although the scoreline doesn't read too great Thomaz did very well to pull through this and you could see he was by far and away the better player and I see no reason why he can't win his next match.

6-2 6-7(11) 6-4 6-7(3) 8-6

He really fought so hard in every set, that was not enough though.
