Re: Maximo Gonzalez -- a new clay court champion?
Unfortunately for Machi, after entering the top 100 again in March of last season after recovering from his torn-ACL injury in the offseason of 2010, his level of play has significantly fallen off and he is now currently injured.
After winning the Santiago challenger over Prodon in the finals, Machi made the SF of St. Breiuc challenger a couple of weeks afterward, and then qualified for Monte Carlo and won his first round match at the tournament, defeating Hanescu in R1 before losing a very tough match to Almagro in the second round. Unfortunately, Machi went on a 12 match losing streak immediately afterward, and didn't win another match until September. After a R1 US Open loss to Wawrinka, Machi won the challenger in Campinas, made the finals of Montevideo, SF of Buenos Aires challenger and two other QFs, but his ranking fell to a year end #121 after failing to defend points from 2010.
In 2012, Machi started with a QF in the Bucaramanga challenger in Colombia, but suffered an injury and has not played since Buenos Aires qualifying, where he lost in R1. Hopefully he will be able to return soon and make a march back into the top 100. Injuries have really harmed him throughout the years and it would be nice to see him have a few healthy seasons as he gets into the final years of his career.
