Re: News Arnaud
ARNAUDS INTERVIEW AFTER HIS LOSS AGAINST KIEFER: Read below he refuses to make a prediction of the Nadal/Gasquet match...soooo funny
Q. Arnaud, Kiefers served was a problem for you.
R. Yeah it was, he served really well. I dont think i returned too badly though. I think i had a good return percentage overall, but many of the poinst he won were on first serve anyway. He returned exceptionally on my second serves, i think that made the difference.
Q. You seem to have lost at Roland Garros in 5 sets quite often. Co-incidence?
R. No i dont know...its weird because i've always focused on developing my game around 2 or 3 sets and its a miracle that i can make it to 5 sets...and the set i played best in is always the 5th. I'm always the most agressive in that set. Simply enough, he broke me and held his serve without much trouble. I'm pretty disapointed at the moment about the way i played; i have to admit, i didnt play well at all.
Q. You mean you dont know what the game turned out the way it did? Just the way it went?
R. Yeah, i'm not sure. It happens...days when youre just playing your best, my forehand let me down...things just dont go well for me. My timing let me down and i found it hard to be agressive throughout the match. At the end, even if it wasnt fantastic, it was the best set i played in the match. I think that if i played the way i played in the 5th set all through the match, i would have had a better chance.
Q. Did you play worse today than you did a few days ago? How do you compare todays to the other matches?
R. No, against Popp, i was really happy to have won that, but i didnt feel like i played badly that day. But Popp did attack well, there were a lot of rallies, more than there were today. But in comparison to today, it was more that Kiefer dictated so i couldnt do a lot. I liked that there were quite a few rallies at the start of the match though, so we could ease into the match a bit. He didnt give me many opportunities. I won the first set, but it wasnt a good set. I mean he broke me two times, what can i say.
Q. What have you thought about your season so far? You've made up a bit of ground recently...
R. I'm going to stop you right there- no one tells me i've had a terrible season. That was last year. Since the start of the year i've been very happy with how i've gone even if i havent achieved great results. I've grown in strength from tournament to tournament. The last few tournaments, i've played really well, i was consistant at Indian Wells and Key Biscayne, i won a few consequetive matches in Casablanca. I havent faired as well at Roland Garros, obviously. Butfor me i felt like Roland Garros was the tournament of the year. Why? Because i hadnt played the 3 masters before hand. But i'm happy of how i played during the start of the year.
I'm very disapoitned today because the way i played today on clay wasnt nearly as well as i played at the start of the year. Far from it. I was really disapointed to have played that badly here at RG. Its a huge disapointment.
Even though i have lost a lot of matches this year, a lot of them against top 10 players, but i beat some guys in the top 20 and top 30 etc so i thought that was good. Personally, i think i'm in good shape.
Q. How do you feel about the upcoming grass season?
R. I feel better than i did last year. I think i'm getting better and better right now. I think i've gotten to another level in my game but i cant stop there. I love playing on grass, i love playing on hardcourt and until the end of the year i'll play indoor. For the moment i'm looking forward to improving my game on a range of surfaces. To beat the top guys, thats what i'm going to have to do.
Q. A bit off the topic- who do you think will win the Gasquet Nadal match? Any predictions?
R. I think i should be concentrating on my doubles match instead of worrying about that! (laughs) I think it will be very hard for Richard, but considering how he has been playign these last few weeks, he may cause the upset. I think the if anyones goign to beat a guy like Nadal, its someone like Richard because he has such a complete game- he can volley, he has a strong forehand, strong backhand...he doesnt have a weaknses. I think Richard has a good chance to beat him, but it'll be a great match whatever happens.
Q. You didn't answer the question, who will win?
R. Uh...no comment
Q. Come on, take a stab.
R. … No (LOL)
Q. It'll help us.
R. I dont know them that well, you know them better than i do. You have seen them play in their respective matches and i'ev hardly seen them play at all. If i really have to say something...nah actually i'm not goign to say anything.
Q. What have you got planned for this afternoon?
R. I've got heaps to do, i have to go for the drug test...I think i'll say Richard.
Q. 4 sets?
R. Richard GASQUET.
