The Great Davy's Great 2014 Thread

Tomorrow Davy starts off a new (hopefully better) season against Brands. He took out Brands last year on Clay and he loves Doha, so here's hoping for a good start!

Re: The Great Davy's Great 2014 Thread

Not sure if I want him to draw a lower seed to help him build his confidence or a total mug... but throughout his career he's always lost more to mugs! The Brands match didn't have a stream so I didn't get to see how he even played, but perhaps he knows he's better off saving his energy for a potential last big run at the slams???

From now on, every time he wins a match (at WorldTour level) I will drink a beer. Sounds legit.

(His tour return I already celebrated yesterday, extensively.)

Here's a nice image I found of Kolya and the family from the Doha Player's Party. At least he seems happy!

Here's hoping he'll get a good draw in Australia so maybe he'll begin to believe he can beat some of the top guys again.

Re: The Great Davy's Great 2014 Thread

Davy was reported to be practicing with Murray yesterday for a couple of hours doing a practice match in Melbourne... maybe practicing with a current top guy (even though I think Peak Davydenko is a little better than Peak Murray) will boost his confidence going into the tournament?

Interesting that Murray would want to practice with Davy... maybe he's hoping he can prime him to take out Nadal in R1

Do you think it would be better or worse for him to draw a seed in R1? EDIT: It will be Kubot in R1 and if he can win, potentially Gasquet R2 but after that a little easier with Robredo and Wawa who he has good records against. In Djokovic's Quarter though... bleh.

Davy through the first round with an epic win over Kubot. He will need to rest hard today so he can be prepared to get some revenge on Gasquet for Doha and RG last season!

He fought hard and choked twice as hard against Gasquet ... but what we can do. Let's hope he can do some damage in his next ATP 250.

I really hope he does some damage... his ranking is slipping fast.

Re: The Great Davy's Great 2014 Thread

Last years' LDAs for the remaining M1000s and strongest ATP500s were:
CANADA: 61 / 60(2012)
CINCY: 47! / 50(2012) / 46(2011)
Beijing: 56 / 68(2012)
SHANGHAI: 55 / 61(2012)
Basel: 73 / 68(2012)
PARIS: 47! / 47!(2012) / 43!(2011)

He may also receive wildcards.

...In 2012 (iirc) he said something like he would retire once he can't make the main draws of the M1000s anymore.
He was certainly talking about a permanent inability to make direct entries to them,
but maybe he has lowered his claims anyway since then.
I mean, there is good money also in the ATP500s, and the 250s aren't so bad either.
As long as he remains in the top80 or top90 it might be possible for him to get a reasonable tour schedule together.
As a former regular top5 player he won't enjoy that too much.
On the other hand, what better could he do instead?
There are some chances that nothing in his life is so urgent that it couldn't be easily postponed for one or two more years on the tour,
and keeping up the passion for the game while still in the top90 is doable with the right mindset.

Davydenko is now ranked 73th !!! The last time he was lower than this was 16.12.2002 !!!!! For fuck's sake , get your shit together , tear apart IW and Miami and go on to one more season ...

Davy's really been having a rough time out there, and the past two times he's played great tennis! He just keeps running into giants in the draw, and at 5'10, playing 6'8 and 6'10 players is no easy task. It seems that the low ranking creates so much more pressure on Kolya by getting him bad draws. If he gets a few opponents closer to the ground, I think he'll be back to winning ways.
Additionally, I think the switch to Babolat was definitely a smart move also.
