Mariano and Gaston lost their doubles match to Ferrer/Verdasco last night. The score was 3-6, 2-6. Not totally surprising I guess - now he can concentrate on the singles. Good Luck Mariano

Re: The Madrid Cheering Thread - Let's Forget the Bad Stuff and Talk about Tennis Instead

Here is a link to an article about the match in Clarins today http://www.clarin.com/diario/2005/10...es/d-06202.htm

I am at work and don't have time to translate all of it - but here is just the bit including Mariano's interview:-

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

-You said a few days ago that your heart was pure. Is that how you beat Mirnyi?
- No, no. I beat him with good tennis because I played almost perfectly today. But I also played from my heart. I am pure heart. It is always the same and I am going to keep on repeating it.

- On a scale of 1 to 10, how did you play today?
- Between 8 and 9. I knew that it was going to be a very difficult match and that I had to concentrate thorughout. In the second Set I lost my concentration a little bit and I almost lost it.

- You seen very content.
- Sure I am if I am playing very well on hard courts indoors. I have already played well in Vietnam, but who is going to say it! And I have hopes. I changed my coach when I reached Number 9 in the world (Guillermo Perez Roldán replacing Andrés Schneiter). That is one of the reasons I won today (for yesterday).

- At Roland Garros you said that you were satisfied to get to the second week. And here in Madrid, what do you hope for here? To arrive to the weekend. – could you be champion?
- This must be Taken little by little considering the players who are here, I am not the favourite in any match on hard courts. Against Mirnyi I was not the favourite and the possibilities were 70 to 30 in his favour. But you can see that I beat him!

- And after Madrid?
- I want to qualify for the Masters. And I have much faith in this. I will go from here to Lyon and then to Paris. I really want to play the Masters.

- Does the triumph over Mirnyi taste something special after everything that you have lived through these days?
- For sure – that is clear. I am of a pure heart.

Re: The Madrid Cheering Thread - Let's Forget the Bad Stuff and Talk about Tennis Instead

Thank you Rosie for a wonderful post. I am heartened to read that Mariano is totally focused on the tennis because he is innocent. I didn't know he changed coaches., but GPR might help him more as he was very good on the ytour himself. I know there is no correlation between beig ver good player and being good coach, but certainly the experience of playing top flight tennis helps. Well done Mariano and all of us who support him let us keep our faith and confidence in his abilities. Vamos Mariano!!!!

Honestly - I never thought he would beat Max, of course I wanted it to happen.

Re: The Madrid Cheering Thread - Let's Forget the Bad Stuff and Talk about Tennis Instead

Mariano played the first set exceptionally well, but unfortunately Ferrer played so much better in the second and third set, and Mariano appeared shell shocked. Anyway, well done and let's focus on the next tournament. Vamos Mariano!!!

Dtiger btw what's your name?
Did you have the chance to watch the match?? From what I read Ferrer played in very high level and Mariano had a lot of ue...
I admire Mariano's dignity. He's as he said, pure heart.

Thanks for the report, dtiger, good to know that Mariano played well
(and Ferrer has been struggling lately, so I'm happy for him that he played well again in front of his home crowd).

The crowd was obviously nice with Mariano too, maybe I was too pessimistic and everything will be fine in France.
Actually I'm glad he plays in Lyon because we'll have live coverage of the tournament on Eurosport for a change!

Re: The Madrid Cheering Thread - Let's Forget the Bad Stuff and Talk about Tennis Instead

I got home at 4-4 in the 1st set so managed to watch most of the match. What dtiger says is true - Mariano played at a very high level in the 1st set (especially in the tie-break) but he seemed to get tired and lose a little focus in the last 2 sets. But this loss was no disgrace and nothing to be ashamed of because Ferrer played extremely well. He is a real fighter - he chased after everything and never EVER gave up (kudos to him), - and with the crowd behind him he managed to get the victory. All in all it was a great match - well done David and good luck for the rest of the tournament - and commmisterations to Mariano - good luck in Lyon.
