Why do you(we) like Gasquet?

Okay so I do not know if it worth a new thread but I keep asking myself this question: Why other musketeers forums like tsonga and monfils are not more popular than this one?
I mean those two seems much more charismatics and Gasquet has a very bad reputation(at least in France)and image comparing to others french tennis players.
I really love Gasquet, his game and his personnality but I always thought I was more interested in weirdos so I am quite surprised that this forum is so active.
Being a Tsonga fan or a Simon fan seems easier but I can't help it, I prefer Gasquet.
Do you guys have any idea?

Yes... the backhand did it for me too...

Maybe not a weirdo but unpopular. I do not read a lot of positive articles about him.

Bless him, he probably has a tough time in his own country.
Overall, I appreciate his game and talent. His backhand is divine, to say the least.

Re: Why do you(we) like Gasquet?

I'm Australian, so I love an underdog, his backhand is a thing of beauty, he's terribly sexy, he's shy and quite reserved, people accuse him of being lazy or lacking the head game and then he goes and plays an epic against Gonzales and the first time I ever saw him was when he played Mathieu at the Sydney International (I've forgotten the year.. I get so confused with summers because of the year changover in the middle over here.. aaaanyway) he hit a backhand winner down the line, Mathieu just stood there, looking like there was absolutely nothing he could have done, and Richie, cool as anything just puts his hand up as if to say, "sorry..!". Mathieu laughed, the crowd laughed and Richie turned to the side of the crowd I was sitting on and gave us the biggest, sexiest smile I've ever seen from him. I never forgot his name after that, and I've been dragging my parents and friends around the courts to find him ever since.

Emilie, i was just wondering, why is Richard unpopular or has a bad reputation in France? Is it because of the coke issue or even before that?

Re: Why do you(we) like Gasquet?

For a lot of reason:
Because he loses matches people believe he should win. He has the image of a a very introvert person without a strong character.
Especially people in france critize his interviews, the way he speak and the fact that he is negative: journalist says that he is not a champion in his attitude. People do not see him as a fighter.
In France at least, people like winners or players with an extravert attitude like Monfils or Tsonga, showmen.
Also and that's the worst for him: french tennis fan have been told that he will be the future federer by the media and they reproach him that( even if he is not responsible for that).
For example, journalists always repeat a legend: that Richard when he was a junior was beating(even destroying) Nadal very easily. Well that's totally untrue!! Gasquet faced Nadal only once when they were young(before being professionals) and Richard beat him but not easily at all!! It was very tight between them they compare them now of course which is very cruel!
I hate to read this because they always make the remark: Can you believe that Gasquet was destroying NAdal when they were juniors! And now look their different situation! blabla
well it is very hard to be a gasquet fan in France

Re: Why do you(we) like Gasquet?

Oh, i see.. it must be difficult for him knowing that he has a lot of critics in his own country. I was under the impression before that French tennis fans adore him, must be the media hype here in the US. On the bright side, he did gain a lot of fans worldwide.

I really think he has what it takes to be the next Federer, we (his fans) should just be patient and give him time.

Thank you Emilie for explaining to us Richie's situation in France. Good thread too.

couldn't have said it better myself

I am a huge fan of tennis, I play all the time and of course love watching it, so I really enjoy someone who plays an exciting game, and his backhand is exciting. Plus I reckon he is a nice guy

Let's not do this
