Re: Robert Smeets

Just because of this result, he should not be given the US Open wildcard.
Smeets has lived off TA hand outs this year, and what has he to show for his efforts? Diddly!
6-1 6-1 7-6 and 6-1 6-0 6-0 he lost his last two main draw matches at Grand Slams, there are other players like Groth and Klein who are younger and better prospects who deserve the wildcard.

Still, congrats on the title

Re: Robert Smeets

When you say 'lived off' do you mean financially, because his ranking has not been affected by the wildcards and he's built that by good form.

I agree the wildcard should go to someone young, imo preferably Brydan.

Let's be realistic for a second here. Smeets is competing consistently at a much higher level than Klein, who hasn't beaten anyone in the top 400 for six months, and has only ever beaten one player in the top 300. Groth is improving, but his results are still not as good as Smeets on the challenger circuit.

There's no point helping guys who aren't within reasonable distance of the top 100 or 150. TA should be helping Smeets get into the top 100, which would leave a free wildcard for someone lower down when he gets there.

Re: Robert Smeets

Wow Smeets lost in R1 surprisingly to Adam Feeney 6-2 6-2 at Brazil as the number 2 seed!

Sexy red.

Re: Robert Smeets

Robert is seeded 31st in the US Open quallies draw.
He won his first round match in straight sets and is one of only two Aussies (the other being Groth) to make R2.

Good luck

Re: Robert Smeets

And now into round 3! Be great if he could lift our huge total of men to 3!

Re: Robert Smeets

And he has a good chance of winning against world number 235 Italian Gianluca Naso. Smeets has to watch out though. Naso did beat 3rd seed Becker in the first round, and had a come from behind win in the second round.

Good luck!

Re: Robert Smeets

Well great news for Rob hes qualified for the US Open and playing in his third grand slam this year. 6-3 7-6(8) was the scoreline, hopefully this is an indictation that Smeetsy is getting a little bit better of a player at the Grand Slam level. Heres hoping for a fair first round opponent.

Re: Robert Smeets

Robert has Mardy Fish who hasn't had much success at Grand Slam level. Hopefully Smeets can put up a respectable score.

Re: Robert Smeets

Robert really deserves this. He's worked hard and took some unfair stick after the French debacle.

Fish is tough but injury prone...he always seems to struggle the week after he has a good run in a tournie. His body doesn't handle a lot of play very well. He'll be hard to beat though.

Re: Robert Smeets

I'll be delighted if he gets a set given his last GS performance.
