US Hard Court season 2017

Boys off and running, with a nice win for Mr Millman over Tiafoe (albeit by virtue of a choke) in the first round of Atlanta.

This week Whittington (lost in R1), Thompson (still to play r1), Bolt (into R2) and Santillan (into R2) in action at Binghamton; Polmans, Purcell, Mouseley and Matosevic at Granby; O'Connell into r2 at Cortina.

Next week's ATP action should (cross fingers) see Kyrgios, Tomic and Thompson at Washington (and Polmans in qualifing); Kokkinakis back in action in Mexico.

Seems Kokkinakis is the only one in qualifying for Montreal and Cincy though - Thompson and Millman have opted for challengers at Aptos and Vancouver instead (probably sensible), while Bernie not prepared to undergo the ignominy of qualifying...

Re: US Hard Court season 2017

Watched part of that final set of Millman's match (had to stop watching at 5-5) but he seemed to be playing much better than when I watched him earlier on his comeback, so positive signs for John

Bernard can't even be bothered to play qualifying after it was his own attitude that got him there? Predictable, but pathetic.

Good to see that there are quite a few Aussies in action this week, and overnight there will be:

CORTINA CH
R2: Chris O'Connell vs Clement Geens (BEL)

GRANBY CH
R1: Marc Polmans vs [Q] Liam Broady (GBR)
R1: Max Purcell vs Hiroki Moriya (JPN)
R1: [Q] Bradley Mousley vs (6) Vincent Millot (FRA)
R1: [Q] Marinko Matosevic vs (4) Denis Shapovalov (CAN)

BINGHAMPTON CH
R1: (1) Jordan Thompson vs Evan King (USA) - to resume at 7-6(1) 3-3*
R2: (4) Akira Santillan vs Ze Zhang (CHN)
R2: Alex Bolt vs (8) Blaz Rola (SLO)

TURKEY F27
R1: [Q] Matthew Romios vs [Q] Martin Dimitrov (BUL)
R1: [Q] Greg Polmans vs [WC] Arsenije Zlatanovic (SRB)

MACEDONIA F1
R1: Dane Propoggia vs (6) Richard Gabb (GBR)
R1: Nicholas Horton vs Giovanni Fonio (ITA)

IRELAND F2
R2: [Q] Edward Bourchier vs Peter Bothwell (IRL)

USA F25
R2: Aleksandar Vukic vs (8) Shane Vinsant (USA)

Re: US Hard Court season 2017

Has anyone noticed the return of 'Baby Poo' Mark Verryth? Mark has finished his uni studies in the states and is determined to make a full time tennis comeback. Nice guy and great game......wishing him well and hopefully will get out there and do damage. He lost this week in the final qualifying round in Granby to Matosevic in three sets.

Re: US Hard Court season 2017

I'm pretty sure I remember Verryth's name from the 2008 AO Program, I remember reading about him right as I was getting into tennis

He hasn't had much success since coming back (including losses to Matosevic in back to back weeks), but hopefully he can maximise his potential

In terms of results from last night...

CORTINA CH
R2: Clement Geens (BEL) def. Chris O'Connell 6-1 3-0 ret.

GRANBY CH
R1: [Q] Liam Broady (GBR) def. Marc Polmans 6-2 6-4
R1: Max Purcell def. Hiroki Moriya (JPN) 6-4 5-7 6-4
R1: [Q] Bradley Mousley def. (6) Vincent Millot (FRA) 7-6(4) 6-3
R1: [Q] Marinko Matosevic vs (4) Denis Shapovalov (CAN) still to be played

BINGHAMPTON CH
R1: (1) Jordan Thompson def. Evan King (USA) 7-6(1) 6-4
R2: Ze Zhang (CHN) def. (4) Akira Santillan 6-4 4-1 ret.
R2: (8) Blaz Rola (SLO) def. Alex Bolt 6-3 6-2

TURKEY F27
R1: [Q] Martin Dimitrov (BUL) def. [Q] Matthew Romios 6-1 6-4
R1: [WC] Arsenije Zlatanovic (SRB) def. [Q] Greg Polmans 7-5 6-3

MACEDONIA F1
R1: (6) Richard Gabb (GBR) def. Dane Propoggia 6-2 6-4
R1: Nicholas Horton def. Giovanni Fonio (ITA) 6-4 3-6 6-3

IRELAND F2
R2: Peter Bothwell (IRL) def. [Q] Edward Bourchier 6-2 7-5

USA F25
R2: Aleksandar Vukic def. (8) Shane Vinsant (USA) 6-2 6-1

Some nice wins there for Purcell, Mousley, Horton & Vukic. Jordan also through in straight, but from the bit I watched he looked very average. Hopefully the retirements for O'Connell and Santillan are nothing too serious either.

Still going this week:

BB&T ATLANTA OPEN
R2: [PR] John Millman vs (4) Ryan Harrison (USA)

GRANBY CH
R1: [Q] Marinko Matosevic vs (4) Denis Shapovalov (CAN) - possible R2 match up with Yuki Bhambri (IND)
R2: Max Purcell vs [Q] Bradley Mousley

BINGHAMPTON CH
R2: (1) Jordan Thompson vs [WC] Alex Rybakov (USA)

USA F25
QF: Aleksandar Vukic vs Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna (ARG)

BELGIUM F6
R2: (2) Maverick Banes vs Tim Van Terheijden (NED)

MACEDONIA F1
R2: Nicholas Horton vs (4) Tsung-Hua Yang (TPE)

Very sensible for both John and Jordan. Thompson could enter the Masters qualies, but as a top seed in the Challengers he stands to pick up many more ranking points, and he's got nothing to defend at this point anyway. Millman's ranking won't collapse until just before the USO, so he's better off using his ranking to get into these events and save that precious PR for the Asian swing when he actually will need it.

Exactly why is Thanasi so allergic to entering Challengers? I think the only one he's played since the '15 AO is the one in Bordeaux, which he won! Those PRs won't last forever at the rate he's using them, so unless he has a dream week somewhere he's going to have to start playing 'em eventually.

Ebden's run at Newport came too late to have any real impact on the North American swing, but at least he now has a real aspiration of making the Top 100 again if he can do well at Los Cabos or the Challengers.

As for Tomic - who really cares? He's plummeting out of the Top 100 rapidly now, has no form and clearly has almost no motivation at the moment. He's always a threat if he can get his head together, but that's not going to be happening over the next few weeks...

Not sure why he is so reluctant to play them, but next week is another wc, not pr, so presumably only has one or two more. Either he wins very soon or no choice...

I do actually feel a bit sorry for Bernie - his father has to shoulder a lot of the blame for this mess: have a read of this one - The phone call from John Tomic that shows why it's all gone wrong for Bernard

Could even be out of top 100 this week theoretically, but definitely falls in two weeks when his Montreal r16 and then Cinny qf points drop out...

Good to see Vukic doing so well - will be a nice jump up in the rankings for him, into the serious zone of 800+.

Tough for Millman. That win would have been huge for his comeback.
Great to see him matching it with top 60 players again.

And Mr Vukic collected his first futures title - jumps to around 643 in a weeks time. I think he has being playing college tennis up until now? Will need his own thread soon...

Really pleased with Vukic who kind of flat lined

Does anyone know where the hell Matt Barton is? disappeared after January, Whittington desperately needs some wins or he may not even make USO Quallies :\

Sexy red.

Good day for the lads with wins at Los Cabos from Kokkinakis, Ebden and Santillan; plus Smith and Purcell at Lexington.
