US Open 2016

Five men in the main draw, and six in qualies - none of whom would have to play each other to make it, interestingly.

Kyrgios peaked to win Atlanta, but was in indifferent form in the two Masters events on either side. He will be seeded in the top 16 though, so will avoid a repeat of playing Murray immediately like last year. In fact, it's high time that Murray wasn't the first top ranked opponent he meets - is the Djokovic matchup ever going to happen?

Tomic could also be seeded in the top 16 if another domino falls, thanks to Roger and Tomas withdrawing and his own solid week in Cincinatti. But either way, 3R/4R should certainly be Bernie's target.

Millman is playing well at the moment, and could do with a winnable first round so he can get a maiden win at Flushing Meadows. I would certainly give him a good chance against the likes of a 17-32 seed if he were to draw one.

Thompson gets another MD entry, having beaten a qualifier at RG and losing to RBA at Wimbledon. Winning a round here would be a fantastic result for him, because it will offset the Challenger points coming off regularly from now to the end of the season and help his chances of making the AO 2017 MD directly also.

Duckworth gets the reciprocal WC. I probably would have preferred Whittington to get it, but I can understand TA's reasoning that throwing the latter straight in to a Slam MD with no real ATP level experience might be a bridge too far - and James has had a decent northern summer after Wimbledon, so could win against a 80-100 type or lower.

Not a great qualification draw - only Saville avoids a seed first up, and given his form of late he might struggle to even beat the American WC he has drawn! Groth plays Kovalik, Whittington plays Souza, Smith plays Kamke and Mitchell plays Montanes...Barton has probably the toughest task against 5th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili, but he has the power to beat him if the Georgian has one of his off days.

But if some of the Aussies can cause upsets in QR1, the pathways are certainly there so that they can make it all the way.

Re: US Open 2016

Great stuff from Barts there - when I left for work, Basilashvili was up a break in the third, so his Houdini powers from Wimbledon qualifying clearly kicked in again.

Groth - all I can say is that he now has nothing left to defend until next year's AO, so the only way is...up?

Mitchell - as expected. Go back to house husbandry again for a few weeks, Ben...

Groth didnt have any match points. Starting second set midway through Kovalik started getting into his services games and that was it. Sam played a decent first set. Double faulted three times in the breaker if I recall

Kokkinakis out with a pectoral strain that he suffered in practice.

Thanasi KOKKinakis - Nick Kyrgios - Alexander Zverev - - MILOs Raonic
100% biased supporter of the Aussies

Just chilling until the Kokk rejoins the tour.

Pectoral strain is an unusual one for a tennis player (I think).

Re: US Open 2016

And, as you might expect, a pair of five setters for those well known Slam marathon men Jordo and Ducks - one a heartbreaker, another a triumph.

I did think Thompson vs Darcis was actually going to be the tougher match, and so it proved, as Jordan blew a couple of match points serving for it in the third to ultimately lose 7-5 6-3 6-7(5) 4-6 5-7. Darcis is a wily customer who doesn't give up, and I can imagine that Jordan was understandably gutted...especially as, unlike the match against Karlovic in Paris, this one was on his racquet. Still, he's got to take the positives out of it and now work his backside off to get enough points in Challengers before the end of the year to get MD entry into the AO.

Duckworth was always in with a chance against Robin Haase, who unlike Darcis is a proven choker, and so it proved as he wins 4-6 7-5 6-3 4-6 6-3. Good to see James back on the winners list in a Slam.
