Re: Aussies in ATP Events

And Duckie is the one who qualifies, getting up in a 3-setter in the Washington qualifying against USA's Alex Sarkissian 46 76(5) 62. Squeeked out of the second set tb to save the match.
Marinko went down 67(9) 46 to USA teenager Jared Donaldson (pity about the tb)
and
Barton lost to evergreen Alex Kuznetsov 46 36.

Tomic, Matosevic, Groth, Jones, JP Smith, Matty Reid, Barton, Duckworth, Whittington, Kubler, Kyrgios, Bolt, Kokkinakis, Polansky and James Ward
Go Aussie

Re: Aussies in ATP Events

At least Barton has still been able to pick up some points in the last couple of weeks by winning one qualifying match - but he is probably better off to stick with Challengers now, leading up to the USO qualies.

Really good day for the Aussies in Washington. Millman, Thompson and Duckworth all progressing smoothly in straight sets.

Re: Aussies in ATP Events

Again Sam Groth goes all the way in both sets, this time against perennial wounded battler Brian Baker, but loses both breakers 3 and 5. Ouch. Needs to play those breakers better, his stats for a big guy are not good.

Jordie Thommo locked in a second round battle at a set all against unpredictable Ukrainian Dolgopolov. Go Jordan

Duckworth, Millman, Tomic still to play their 2nd round matches

Tomic, Matosevic, Groth, Jones, JP Smith, Matty Reid, Barton, Duckworth, Whittington, Kubler, Kyrgios, Bolt, Kokkinakis, Polansky and James Ward
Go Aussie

Former Australian Akira Santillan scored a wildcard into Kitzbuhel this week but lost 6-2 6-2 to Struff. Santillan is ranked 295, last time I checked he was still around 800

Re: Aussies in ATP Events

OK, so the Toronto Masters next week will feature Kyrgios / Tomic / Millman in the main draw, with Groth / Duckworth / Barton in qualies.

This is the point where John Millman begins defending quite a lot of his points from 2015 (198 of them to the end of USO to be precise), so he's actually in need of a win or two before the Olympics, not to mention the fact that this tournament now has to count in his ranking no matter what happens.

I'm still not sold on Barton playing all these ATP qualies. Yes, he's holding his own in them, earning decent coin with no points to lose - but I can't help thinking that trying to win a Challenger might be the best way to get that points boost towards the 100-150 range where I hope he'll end the year. But he seems to have decided that this is the path to follow leading into USO qualies...and you never know, if he can get that serve and forehand firing he has the capacity to surprise.

Re: Aussies in ATP Events

Toronto Masters 1000

Q1 James Mcgee Def (10) Groth 6-3 3-6 6-3
Q1 (14) James Duckworth Def (WC) Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-5 7-6(3)
Q1 Emilo Gomez Def (13) Matthew Barton 7-6(3) 7-5

FRQ (14) James Duckworth Vs (4) Dennis Nokikov

R1 John Millman Vs (Q)
R1 (11) Nick Kyrgios Vs (WC) Denis Shapovalov ( this will be good!)
R1 (12) Bernard Tomic Vs (Q)

I must say Groth and Bartons losees were really bad missed out on 16 points just for winning 1 match in a 1000! very very disappointing, happy for James winning matches now

Re: Aussies in ATP Events

James is back on track. I agree on Talkontennis re Matt Barton too. He needs to take the Jordan Thompson path and mix it up. Get lots of points before focusing exclusively on the atp. Groth....focus on doubles I think.

Re: Aussies in ATP Events

So the world of tennis moves on to Mason, OH for the Cincinatti Masters.

Millman has qualified, so he joins Nick and Bernie in the main draw.

Nick leads off against Lucas Pouille, which could be a tricky one, with Coric awaiting in R2 and a possible R3 against Nadal if the latter actually plays here.

Bernie plays Joao Sousa first, to play the winner of Goffin/Basilashvili in R2 and a projected R3 against Nishikori if the latter actually plays here.

And John gets a stroke of luck drawing fellow qualifier Jaziri in R1. Win that, and it's Thiem in R2, and given the way the latter seems to have totally hit the wall in recent weeks he wouldn't be without a shot there either.
