Wimbledon 2016

Just over two weeks until the third slam of the year starts. Wimbledon should be our most successful slam of the year for a number of reasons.

  • Two former quarter finalists and a junior champion
  • It's a grand slam so certain players (exhibit A: former quarter finalists) will actually care about the event
  • Wimbledon is on grass, a surface some of our guys can actually/only play on!

In the main draw we will have Kyrgios, Tomic, Millman, Thompson, Groth, and anyone who manages to win a grass challenger this week or next. Ebden, Smith, Duckworth, and Saville are in qualifying, while Mitchell is the 10th alternate.

Unfortunately Kokkinakis has pulled out again

Re: Wimbledon 2016

Of course, the double edged sword is that because the Aussie guys love playing at Wimbledon, they usually have a lot of points to defend there.

This year for instance, Kyrgios is defending 180, Bernie and Sam 90 each, Millman 70 for qualifying and winning a round, Duckworth and Ebden 45, and Saville and Smith 35 each!

Nick and Bernie will be seeded so should fare OK. Groth could certainly do well again, but he'll need to because his ranking is being absolutely shredded to pieces over the coming weeks. The Mailman can certainly run with all but the very best. But Thompson is really the only one of our entrants who could grow his ranking instantly if he follows up his RG success by winning a round at the AELTC.

Naturally the draws will be all important...there are lots of clay dogs in the lower reaches of the Top 100 who you would give almost any of our guys a chance at beating.

As for the qualies - who knows if Ebden will actually play, and I wouldn't be too confident even if he does. JP is not having a fantastic season this year, but Ducks may go alright - as for Saville, I am convinced he is the male Sabine Lisicki and suddenly becomes a tennis player when he sets foot on Roehampton, so he might just make it three years in a row!

Re: Wimbledon 2016

I suppose this was predictable but still can't believe it - Hewitt has unretired himself (again)and obtained yet another wc for Wimbly doubles with Thompson...

Re: Wimbledon 2016

What the hell, how much longer will this go on for? He already had his farewell tour all of last year, it feels like he's doing it all over again this year. What are the chances he'll enter something next year at the Australian Open?

Ebden withdrew from qualifying so he's going to lose another 45 points. Mitchell would be in but he also withdrew, and Barton is now the 7th alternate.

If not Hewitt, I'm sure Thompson wouldn't receive WC. And I remember how Pat Rafter played doubles after official retire.

You mean the occasion when Lleyton persuaded him to make a fool of himself...

Certainly agree that Jordan wouldn't have received a wild card but so what? Can't see it really helping his game.

I suppose it will be good for raising Jordan's public profile, but says more about the desperation for tv ratings/any Oz tennis players with credibility than anything else.

If Lleyton really can't stay away, would have been a nice gesture to play with Millman to make up for usurping his place on the DC team.

Who cares. This is the first slam that Thompson has made the singles main draw off his own ranking, I highly doubt he was desperate to score a main draw berth in the doubles.

Re: Wimbledon 2016

Matthew Barton v [32] Marco Trungelliti
JP Smith v [22] Austin Krajicek
Luke Saville v Oriol Roca Batalla
James Duckworth v [25] Kenny De Schepper

The first three should fancy their chances, but I'm not sure how Duckworth will go against De Schepper on grass. Saville's draw is just ridiculous though, Roca Batalla has never played a match on grass, his possible second round opponents are Gonzalez (0-6 on grass) and Setkic (0-4), while the top seed in his section Andrej Martin has never played on grass either

Re: Wimbledon 2016

Nice to see Barton get in here - these Slam qualies will certainly boost the old pay packet, and he can still pick up ranking points as we saw at RG. He's not without a chance of making it all the way, either - Khachanov looms as the big threat in that section obviously, but he hasn't played any matches on grass at all in the leadup.

Austin Krajicek is in even worse current form than JP, so I'm backing the latter. As with Barton, the Q2 should go OK but a potential final matchup against Fratangelo or Harrison could be tricky...the Jipper did make it through last year, though...

Saville - clearly been using that Roehampton lucky horseshoe! Although being Luke, now that his path looks very easy, I hope he doesn't find a way to stuff this up...

De Schepper is a tough starter for Ducks, although James has actually been in very reasonable form himself. Having said that, if he does get through he'll probably play Copil who is on a real grass hot streak at the moment.

Still, that's certainly a decent enough draw for everyone.

Home | Live Scores & Latest News | Fox Sports

They've been advertising it for a while but Fox Sports is seriously stepping up its coverage for Wimbledon by showing up to 7 live matches at once. This is in addition to Channel 7 (but I think they only have one match at a time? And it will probably be the same as one on Fox Sports anyway)

@Dmitry Verdasco they might actually televise women's matches now
