Oliver Anderson - A new rising star...

It is surely time for Oliver Anderson to have his own thread, as he has just clocked up a very nice win in Brisbane qualifying, over Denis Novikov (currently ranked 150), 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

A clear case of justifying the wildcard granted to him based on his promise!

Mr Anderson was born on 30 April 1998, and is currently ranked 806. He has clocked up two very nice challenger wins to date, over Brad Mousley (560) and fellow 98er, Duckhee Lee (253). He was the runner up the 18 and unders in December.

Plays Smyczek in the next round, which is probably too much of a stretch, but you never know...

Re: Oliver Anderson - A new rising star...

Nice thread. Pleased with Oliver's progress towards the end of last year, I don't think he's got enough recognition.

Beating Novikov is huge for him and Smyczek struggled today so I wouldn't put qualifying past him. All 4 Q spots also have reasonable match ups, if he could get the one against another Q in R1 then that's a big opportunity.

Hoping there's a QWC at AO

Great win for Oli over Smyczek 6-7(3) 7-6(1) 6-2, against a guy who really pushed Nadal at the open last year. Nadal wasn't at his absolute best but still, no small feat.

Have to think that Oli is now assured a QWC.

At least. Beating two 100-200 ranked players suggests MD should be a possibility...

Whilst in good form, his form on a bigger scale shows a QWC is probably a just reward. In years where we didnt have as many guys pushing for the spot it would be a possibility. Not this year.

But this is what wild cards should really be used for - giving a boost and a chance to get used to the big stage to players who are really going to make their mark. All the sings are he is going to move up fast. Now is just the right time to give him an experience on the big stage before it really matters.

Re: Oliver Anderson - A new rising star...

Excellent! He was two points from defeat too. Hopefully the main draw placing is a good one. 50% chance he'll face a qualifier in round 1

Regarding WCs... I think he'd have a chance to win against a lower ranked opponent (75-100) but best of 5 may be more challenging, and I highly doubt he'll get one. Certainly if he gets chosen over Smith, Thompson and Mitchell it's not going to be a popular decision!

Not popular with any of those three and their small band of supporters maybe, but I reckon the prospect of a new hot young prospect coming up would be extremely popular with the wider Australian public.

And its not like any of the others have managed to do anything in five sets to this point - not a single slam match win between them despite each of them having received at least one slam wc opportunity (and more in the case of Mitchell and Thompson) in the past.

Re: Oliver Anderson - A new rising star...

And on five sets issue, worth noting that Anderson has won two three set matches two days in a row...

I'd love to see him get one. I don't think Thompson or Mitchell (or even Smith) would win a round regardless, in the past all these guys always get gift draws and Duckworth the only one who's ever won a few rounds off the WC.

Anderson would really benefit from it, to have that experience at a young age. I would be surprised if TA even consider it though. I think to get into the mix he has to win 1 or 2 rounds in Brisbane, which I actually think could be possible considering the spots available for Qs. I'd like to see him get the spot where he can beat Mitchell and get a go against Federer.

Re: Oliver Anderson - A new rising star...

Nice piece on the win from 7 Sport:

Quote:
Little-known Brisbane teenager Oliver Anderson has qualified for his first ever ATP World Tour main draw with a huge upset over American Tim Smyczek on Sunday.

Anderson, 17, recovered after losing the first set to win 6-7 (7-3) 7-6 (7-1) 6-2 and sweep aside Smyczek, a one-time junior Wimbledon semi-finalist who is ranked No.109 in the world to the Australian's No.813.

Smyczek is best known for an act of good sportsmanship at last year's Australian Open, when he won a swag of admirers for allowing Rafael Nadal to replay a serve when a spectator yelled out during his ball toss.

The win could see Anderson face off against fellow Australian Ben Mitchell, Frenchman Lucas Pouille or another qualifier in the first round at the Brisbane International.

Anderson had some raucous support behind him on Show Court 2 at the Queensland Tennis Centre with friends and family on hand to cheer on the biggest win of his career so far - the best crowd he said he's ever played in front of.

But Anderson said he'll have no trouble coming off the high when he returns to action on Monday.

"I've already started thinking about it. I'm pretty focused on what I need to do tomorrow," said Anderson, who was used as a fill-in player at the 2014 Hopman Cup where he paired with Italian star Flavia Pennetta for an exhibition mixed doubles match.

Not that he was expecting to do much in his hometown tournament, admitting he was "scared" in the lead-up to qualifiers.

"Enjoy it while it lasts," Anderson said when asked what his mindset was like in preparation.

"I didn't have my hopes up too high. I'm surprised with how I went."

But he said he could already feel the improvement in his game after a change of coach just two weeks ago, from Mark Draper to former Davis Cup player Wayne Arthurs, who has moved to Brisbane.

"We've been doing well together so far. He's helped a lot with my serve ... because he had a pretty good one," Anderson said.

A q v q (like say Nishioka!) would be better - suspect Mitchell might feel a bit motivated at the moment! And don't see why TA wouldn't consider it - they've given one to Jasika after all.
