Alex De Minaur Cheering Thread

I know its early but I think that Alex and Alexei (Popyrin) deserve their own profiles as they are about to become the next talked about Juniors now that Jasika, Bourchier, Mousley () and Polmans start to embark upon their senior careers.

Alex de Minaur born 17.02.1999 is currently ranked 154 (highest 145) in the Junior rankings. This is before you take into account that 53 of the players ahead of him are no longer eligible to play Junior events, so effectively he is 101.

He has just won the Australian 16 & Under championships over top seed Blake Ellis 6-1 6-2 at the recent December Showdown. During 2014 he won ITF Junior Singles events in Spain (Grade 3) and Chile (Grade 4),both on clay.

In 2013, he won the 14 & Under National Grasscourt championships in Mildura and also the National 14 & Under singles Championships at the December Showdown.

Re: Alex De Minaur Cheering Thread

Alex is through to the Quarter Final of the Grade A event in Porto Alegre on clay. For those who dont know, Grade A is the level under Junior Grand Slams and there are only 5 of them each year. Last year these 5 events were won by Orlando Luz (now number 2 junior), Michael Mmoh, Stefan Kozlov, Taylor Harry Fritz and Roman Safiullin.

He beat the 8th seed and world number 27 junior Juan Jose Rosas of Peru in the first round 6-2 6-0. He has since beaten Paraguayan qualifier Bruno Britez 6-3 6-4 and American Liam Caruana 6-1 6-3. Tonight he takes on Italian Federico Bonacia, more than 2 years his senior in the Quarter Final.

Alex is through to the SF with a 6-2 7-5 win over Federico Bonacia.

Will play 6th seeded American William Blumberg (ranked 34) for a spot in the final.

William, who has just turned 17, is also more than a year older than Alex.

Re: Alex De Minaur Cheering Thread

As a result of reaching the SF of the Porto Alegre Juniors event, Alex's ranking has risen 43 spots to 60 and 4th amongst Australians behind Jasika, Polmans and Jake Delaney.

There is only one player born in 1999 that is ranked higher - Miomir Kecmanovic from Serbia who is ranked 26th.

Re: Alex De Minaur Cheering Thread

Browsing through the results I noticed that young Alex, the only Aussie in the US Open Junior Boys qualies, won through to the main draw.
He has then progressed to the second round with a 64 64 win over American Alexandre Rotsaert.
Go young Alex.

Go young Alex.
Plays Japans Yamasaki in Rd 2, who is 2 years older but 60 spots lower in the junior rankings (which sometimes don't mean much).

He did however beat the 8th seed in Rd1, hopefully Alex can get through.

Re: Alex De Minaur Cheering Thread

Alex is through to the last 16 in New York, 6-1 7-6(4) over Yamasaki.

Plays 9th seed William Blumberg of USA who is a year older. They have met 3 times this year with Blumberg leading the H2H 2-1, however this is their first meeting on Hard Court. Blumberg's wins both came on Clay, while Alex beat him on the Grass at Roehampton.

Re: Alex De Minaur Cheering Thread

Alex wins his second round tie against Yamasaki 61 76(4), to advance to the round of 16. Great to see.

Also had a win in the first round of the doubles, playing with Danish player Hannestad, knocking off the No.8 seeds.

Re: Alex De Minaur Cheering Thread

Alex has beaten 9th seed William Blumberg in 3 sets.

Now takes on Michael Mmoh who has been really really good this year in the juniors (7 junior titles), and done pretty well in the seniors (2 Futures titles - ranked 507) as well.

Not sure Alex will get him but hoping that he at least can push him to 3 sets.

Go Alex!

Re: Alex De Minaur Cheering Thread

Very nice result.

Would be fantastic if he can take out Tommy Paul, the Americans are getting a little too smug about their juniors for my taste!
