Two Aussies in the tournament and they draw each other (three actually as Jarryd Chaplin got a WC into the tournament courtesy of the local College which he attends). Bad luck for them but that means that at least Australia will be represented in the second round. And that was not Jipper, who went down to Sam Groth in straight sets 36 36. Sam served well and did not face a bp in the match while Jipper faced 5bps, dropping serve three times.
I expected Jipper to win that, as he returns well normally and his consistent game style could wear Sam down and cause Sam to make errors, or pass Sam at the net, but not to be.
Doubles : Ex-collegiate gun JP Smith and big serving Sam Groth take out the doubles title in Knoxville with a come from behind 67(6) 62 10-7 win over fellow Aussie(? really) Carsten Ball and singles finalist Canadian Peter Polansky.
Rnd 2: JP through to the GF round with a good 63 64 win over alternate Sanam Singh (ATP322).
JP has had a dream draw, getting a 63 75 win over WC Tim Kopinski in the 1st round.
(JP yet to have a win over a top 100 player this year).
Ride that luck JP... perhaps next round - plays the winner of Sock/Sandgren in QF round.
