Neither do I. At least they have the grasscourt season to see how we go on it but it seems like an unnecessary risk. Olivier Rochus made the semis of Halle last year and Malisse is a former Wimbledon Semi Finalist so there are two Belgians that excel on it. Luczak won't be selected for a grasscourt tie which leaves Ball who only won 1 of 4 matches at junior level on the grass. Gooch is a question mark. Tomic may have some good results on it in juniors but he only beat Brzezicki and Bogomolov at senior level on it. If Hewitt gets injured Australia will be big favourites to get knocked out. If Hewitt got injured, Australia would have the depth in the squad to still have a strong hope of beating the Belgians on hard.

Davis Cup tennis heading to Cairns

Melbourne,02 July 2010

Australia will host Belgium in Cairns for a place in the World Group of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.

Queensland Minister for Sport Phil Reeves, Cairns Mayor Val Schier and Tennis Australia Major Events boss Steve Ayles were on site this morning jointly announcing the North Queensland city had won the right to host the World Group Play-off tie from 17 to 19 September.

“Cairns has outperformed all other bids and put in a very impressive submission,” Ayles told local media.

“We go through a long list of criteria before deciding on a venue for an event as important as a Davis Cup tie. In the end we make a collective decision on what will be the best for the team and for tennis,” he said.

Ayles explained that when considering the various bids some of the factors taken into account include what the event can do for the sport in that region, the standard of facilities, surface, general playing and training conditions, team preference, climate, community interest, accommodation, broadcast requirements and commercial viability.

Speaking from Wimbledon where he has been working with the Australian players, Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald reminded that Davis Cup was a unique competition and a very special brand of incredibly competitive tennis.

“The players put it all on the line for their country. Cairns will get the chance to see some world-class tennis,” Fitzgerald said.

Queensland Minister for Sport Phil Reeves said the tie would be the first international Davis Cup tie to be played at the Cairns Regional Tennis Centre, which has recently benefited from an almost $2 million State Government funded facilities upgrade.

“This is a great coup for the Cairns region and definitive proof that international tennis is on the rise in Queensland,” Mr Reeves said.

“The Bligh Government is thrilled to bring an international event to a regional centre, complementing our extensive regional sporting, arts and cultural events program throughout the state.

Cairns Mayor Val Schier welcomed the decision.

“It is great for the community to get such a prestigious international event,” she said. “This will be a terrific opportunity for the kids to see their idols in action.”

Tickets for the event will go on sale in August.

Doubles specialist Paul Hanley has won the last spot in Australia's Davis Cup team to face Belgium in this month's World Group playoff in Cairns.

Hanley has edged out Chris Guccione to join Lleyton Hewitt, Peter Luczak and Carsten Ball in the four-man team for the hardcourt tie from September 17-19.

Australian captain John Fitzgerald and coach Todd Woodbridge agonised over the final make-up of their line-up before opting for Hanley after he reached the US Open doubles quarter-finals with Swedish partner Simon Aspelin.

Hanley also gives Australia flexibility in selection, having teamed successfully with Hewitt several times before in Davis Cup and also winning a rubber with Ball this year against Taiwan.

"We know that Paul's very adaptable with anybody and the doubles facet is going to be really important here," Woodbridge told AAP on Sunday.

"He and Lleyton played in the tie we played against Belgium in Belgium (in 2007) and played a very good match and, although we lost the tie, won against Olivier Rochus and Kristof Vliegen.

"So we feel like psychologically Paul comes into this match really strong.

"He will come in with some confidence too. He's in the quarters here minimum and, if he can win another one, that's even better. And even more would be great.

"So he's the form Australian player of the whole tournament at the moment. That's a key element for anybody. I'm sure all our guys would have liked more matches here."

Guccione and Ball lost their first-round doubles match at Flushing Meadows 6-3 7-6 (7-4) against accomplished French pair Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra.

Guccione is yet to his his straps after eight months out with a torn Achilles tendon.

"I've been really happy with the effort he's put in," Woodbridge said.

"I asked him to do everything possible to get ready here. Unfortunately he needed another couple of matches to be picked.

"There's also the fact he's getting married next weekend and wouldn't have arrived back into Cairns until the Wednesday (before the Friday start).

"So it would have been a big call and potentially a dangerous call to get him as ready as you would have liked to get him ready for a tie like that.

"He understood that perfectly."

Woodbridge said Luczak and Ball were still fighting to win Australia's second singles spot behind Hewitt.

Melbourne's world No.167 Marinko Matosevic will join the squad as a hitting partner, while Wimbledon junior runner-up Benjamin Mitchell is the designated "orange boy".

Good stuff by Lleyton!

Ball kept the sets pretty close but Rochus was too consistent. I thought Ball might have pushed it to at least 4 as he was starting to show some good signs at the end of the 3rd, but not to be.

Good stuff. Lleyton should (fingers crossed) seal the deal tomorrow against Rochus.

Hanley/Hewitt edge Australia ahead

The Australian Davis Cup team has two things to celebrate after the second day of its World Group play-off tie against Belgium. The hosts have taken a 2-1 advantage at the Cairns International Tennis Centre, after Lleyton Hewitt and Paul Hanley posted an easy 61 62 64 win over Olivier Rochus and Ruben Bemelmans. The win also gave Hewitt the kudos of becoming the most successful Davis Cup player in Australian history, by recording his 44th win in the competition.

It means Hewitt and Rochus will have all to play for in the battle of the No. 1s on Sunday. The last time the Aussies lost a tie when leading 2-1 going into the final day was all the way back in 1998, in a first round tie against Zimbabwe. That’s a 12-year record they would like to keep intact this weekend.

Hewitt and Hanley came into the doubles rubber with a 4-1 record together in Davis Cup, and Hanley certainly confirmed to captain John Fitzgerald that he’d made the right decision in selecting him for the team ahead of Chris Guccione. The 32-year-old was seamless throughout the match, unsurprising given his credentials – 23 doubles titles, a run to this month’s US Open quarterfinals and an undefeated record on hard court in Davis Cup.

“Experience is confidence,” explained Hanley. “When you’ve played big matches in front of big crowds that certainly helps.”

In contrast, it was a first-time partnership for the Belgians, and with Darcis still injured, a last-minute blend of Rochus’s long-term doubles expertise at both Davis Cup and Grand Slam level, and a young player who had never played doubles at tour-level before. The disconnection showed.

Australia raced through the first set 6-1, breaking both the Rochus and Bemelmans serve. The Belgians seemed a bit unsettled from the outset and when light drizzle hit the stadium 13 minutes into the match, their reluctance to play in the slippery conditions, and their opponents eagerness to keep going, was almost ominous.

Hewitt and Hanley needed even less time to secure the second set, breaking in the first and seventh games to close out the set 62 in just 24 minutes. Bemelmans appeared sluggish compared to his demeanour on Friday, his slow reactions at the net highlighting his lack of doubles experience.

A half an hour rain delay in the final set with the Belgians leading 2-1 applied a glimmer of hope for the visitors to regroup. The Aussies broke just once in the sixth game due to some frustrating errors from Bemelmans, and the pair couldn’t quite close out the match on their first match point at 5-4 40-30 after Rochus came up with a huge serve out wide. But it was Hewitt who served out victory, much to his partner’s surprise.

“He didn’t even know we’d won,” laughed Hewitt after the match.

It was a result captain Reginald Willems expected. “Yes they played a great doubles, great serve, great return. We knew it was difficult today. Even with Steve I don’t think we would have won it.”

Belgium has a big task tomorrow in needing to win both singles matches in order to win the tie. Hewitt may have won all three previous meetings against the diminutive Rochus but it’s their last that is the most significant – a five-setter in Davis Cup back in 2007, in the tie that bundled Australia out of the World Group.

“You’ve got to start again when you go head-to-head with someone,” says Fitzgerald. “We’ve a lot of respect for Oli, he’s a wonderful player.”

Pete goes down to Rochus in 4.
