Why? Bernie played well, I think, and it may well be a top 20 to get close to the end of the season. Me this is a defeat, just kill.

I don't know if Lleyton can play another Davis Cup tie again. This just may be too much...

I think, in DC should will play young boys, Tomic, Ebden, Kubler, Duckworth, Smith, Klein. Lleyton, I think it's time to finish his speech in Davis Cup.

Re: The Everything Davis Cup Thread (News, Articles, Live Scores)

If I said I was saddened by this loss, I'd be lying. A few points.

1) This probably turned out to be the easiest draw of the playoffs. Germany minus Haas and Kohlschrieber, Petzschner not playing singles. #25 Mayer, #127 Stebe fielded singles duties.

2) Team selections were wrong. Clay tie. Hewitt hasn't won a clay match since 2010. Ebden is 0-5 on clay this year, including a 63 60 loss to #237 Gianluco Naso. Matosevic should have been in the team, and in hindsight was a better shot at beating Stebe than Hewitt ever was.

3) The inevitable blaming of Tomic. I just don't get it. He won the match he was supposed to win. Mayer is ranked higher than him so it's not like it's a match he was supposed to win, he's not even that good on clay. The key match was our #2 versus their #2, and with them playing Stebe we should have won that rubber. Rafter can complain about Tomic in public all he wants, I hope Tomic gets fed up with it and stops playing under Rafter. Rafter is alienated Tomic to everyone the same way he did about Philippoussis. I don't even like Tomic at all, but I'm firmly on his side through all of this.

4) Who do we play now? Vietnam or someone?

There is other problem, Lleyton should not play on the first day, 3 days in a row to play very hard. Matosevic in the team, almost certainly will not be as long as, there captain Rafter.

Rafter admitted it had been a gamble to pick his great mate Hewitt with the scores locked at 2-2.

“I was a little worried after the doubles match how much energy Lleyton used out there,” Rafter said.

“It was a very intense doubles match and a must-win doubles match.

“It is very hard to come out and play singles the next day.
Rafter repeated the mistake of last year, three days in a row play Lleyton, he not 20 year old boy, after the surgery, and so far has not received the required physical form...

You're 100% correct. No one seems to even question the captains and their choices, no one is held accountable. They should make Tomic the scapegoat.

After Mayer beat Hewitt, I read in the paper "Hewitt beaten by RED HOT Mayer" but now Mayer beat Tomic it's all just about how Rafter and Roche gave him a serve, suspected to be about his effort of course.

What was Roche talking to Tomic about? The old man should keep his mouth shut and concentrate on his own player.

Be realistic.

Clay is not a good surface for Tomic either, and even though he's Australia's #1 - Mayer is still ranked higher.

It's not Tomic's fault Hewitt only played 1 clay event.

Re: The Everything Davis Cup Thread (News, Articles, Live Scores)

SEN commentator Brett Phillips said Roche, sitting just behind Tomic, tore into the 19-year-old as he spoke to team captain Pat Rafter between games.

"We don't know what was said, but it was animated," Phillips said.

Phillips guessed that the usually mild-mannered Roche was saying something along the lines of "It's on the line here … can you get some intensity about you?"

Phillips described Tomic's performance as a "really disappointing effort", and "lackadaisical".

Agree.

Too many of the Tennis Australia boys club seem to keep sticking their nose in years after their direct involvement with Davis Cup/coaching. Newcombe, Roche, Rasheed, Masur, Woodforde.

Would anyone else love to see Tomic hire Philippoussis as coach?
