If I said I was saddened by this loss, I'd be lying. A few points.
1) This probably turned out to be the easiest draw of the playoffs. Germany minus Haas and Kohlschrieber, Petzschner not playing singles. #25 Mayer, #127 Stebe fielded singles duties.
2) Team selections were wrong. Clay tie. Hewitt hasn't won a clay match since 2010. Ebden is 0-5 on clay this year, including a 63 60 loss to #237 Gianluco Naso. Matosevic should have been in the team, and in hindsight was a better shot at beating Stebe than Hewitt ever was.
3) The inevitable blaming of Tomic. I just don't get it. He won the match he was supposed to win. Mayer is ranked higher than him so it's not like it's a match he was supposed to win, he's not even that good on clay. The key match was our #2 versus their #2, and with them playing Stebe we should have won that rubber. Rafter can complain about Tomic in public all he wants, I hope Tomic gets fed up with it and stops playing under Rafter. Rafter is alienated Tomic to everyone the same way he did about Philippoussis. I don't even like Tomic at all, but I'm firmly on his side through all of this.
4) Who do we play now? Vietnam or someone?
