Tomic's ranking in a years time?

What would be a realistic ranking that Tomic is capable of having by the time the Australian Open 2011 comes around?

Some speculate in the top 100.

Please discus.

Re: Tomic's ranking in a years time?

Depends what schedule he undertakes.

If he were to play a full year he can get top 200 but I don't think he will get top 100. His results overseas at the professional level have been disappointing except for Wimbledon where he drew two grasscourt mugs in qualies. Even looking at his results in Australia in the few tournaments he played he lost in straights to Dolgopolov and the also lost to Lindahl and Ebden in the wildcard playoff. The exho wins and the second round at Aus Open looks good but there are a heap of question marks surrounding it. Plus his clay court tennis probably isn't up to scratch so he won't be able to benefit from the large amount of clay court challengers.

I think it's unfair of the media especially at such a young age to be placing such a big expectation on him for this year based on a handful of senior results and his junior results. Top 100 won't be a problem for him in a few years but by next year. I don't think so.

It does depend on how much he plays this year, but he is easily capable of making top 100 because other then a challenger in melbourne what points does he have to defend so he might aswell play heeps of tennis good luck at the end of 2010 120 around that mark, at the end of 2011 40 around that.

Having no points to defend is a huge disadvantage. If he wants to crack the top 100 he will have to rely on wildcards into challengers and ATP Tournaments. He will get some but he wont get a wildcard into heaps of tournaments. And when he doesnt get them he has to qualify and that's not easy as seen by his last two American challengers where he failed to get past the Qualies stage.

Re: Tomic's ranking in a years time?

Well Tomic has 88 points to defend over the next month and from what I've been able to see he has not entered any tournaments. So he looks to be ranked about 490 by the end of February which is not going to get him entry into any challengers.

He is basically just going to have to either get wildcards into challengers or go back to the futures tour.

Unless he can win a challenger later this year I can't see him finish inside the top 200.

I really don't know what he is doing as far as scheduling so it's impossible to make that prediction. With a full year on the tour it would be a reasonable goal to aim for around the 150-200 mark.

Re: Tomic's ranking in a years time?

His ranking will probably reflect what Tennis Australia wants it to be. (wildcards etc) He will no doubt be close to top 200 by end of year. It would be interesting to reflect on what his ranking would be at moment had he not been given wildcard assistance at grand slams and challengers bearing in mind he had suspension period from futures events in 2009. Would there still be the hype if he slipped back in the rankings with the rest of the Aussie guys?

Thats interesting that they are saying he is going to come to Burnie, he is not on the entry list but I guess they are going to give him a wildcard.

A good result in Burnie would definetly increase his chances of playing regular challenger tennis for the whole year.

Re: Tomic's ranking in a years time?

Tomic has to inevitably work his way up from Futures and Challengers level. We can't spoonfeed a player of great talent (thats waht i think, you may not agree) or else the Tomic won't reach his potential.
