Re: Ben Mitchell's Banana Party
When a player has few points to defend it is easier to progress up the rankings than when having a full season of oints to defend. The 1989 year had a few players, Klein, Millman, Jones who progressed well at first but then could not consolidate (Klein, Millman) in the top 200. Jonesie is close, having been in the 200's the whole year. The 1990 and 1991 year have not done well - Matt Reid being the best performer (from memory).
Lack of opportunities from TA is part of the problem. When that group were teenagers wild cards were given to older players such as Alun Jones, Jo Sirianni, etc. Then TA changed to the "youth policy" and Tomic and Kubler benefitted. Millman has had a few WC's, whilst Jonesie has only ever had 1 WC into an ATP event, none into a Grand Slam, despite being a top 4 ITF Junior, in the Oz top 10 for four years and even chipped in with a silver medal in the CWG.
Hopefully the 1992 borns can step-up and remain in the top 200 next year.
