Aussies at French Open

Fabio Fognini ITA [1] vs. Kyu-Tae Im KOR
Victor Estrella DOM vs. Mikhail Kukushkin KAZ
Giovanni Lapentti ECU vs. Benoît Paire FRA [WC]
Robert Smeets AUS vs. Michail Elgin RUS [23]

Don't know why Smeets is trying to qualify. Might be able to pull of a lucky win against Elgin who has preferred the Hardcourts over the clay this year but still Elgin does have challenger tournament victories to his name on clay albeit the lowel level ones. A second round win would be a shock. A win in the final round would be a huge shock.

Leonardo Mayer ARG [2] vs. George Bastl SUI
Thiemo de Bakker NED vs. Marsel Ilhan TUR
Santiago Gonzalez MEX vs. Stéphane Robert FRA
Brydan Klein AUS vs. Kevin Anderson RSA [31]

Klein's first match on clay was not impressive. Based on that he is just here for the experience and really shouldn't have any hope of qualifying. Anderson has been good on clay this year. Would be a surprise to see him beat Anderson.

Guillermo Cañas ARG [5] vs. Paolo Lorenzi ITA
Daniel Muñoz-De la Nava ESP vs. Martin Alund ARG
Joseph Sirianni AUS vs. Martin Fischer AUT
Jonathan Dasnières de Véigy FRA [WC] vs. Ilija Bozoljac SRB [21]

Good to see that Joe got into the Qualifying draw. Unfortunately it will be extremely difficult for him to qualify though. He has to make the transition to clay and the match against Fischer will not be easy. Although Fischer hasn't been outstanding he should still be too good fo Joe on clay. If Joe could somehow pull out a win I couldn't see him defeating Bozoljac and definitely not Canas.

Sergiy Stakhovsky UKR [9] vs. Rik de Voest RSA
Stéphane Bohli SUI vs. Ryan Sweeting USA
Alexander Flock GER vs. Adrian Ungur ROU
Peter Luczak AUS vs. Chris Guccione AUS [27]

If Looch is on his game he should qualify even if he plays up to the standard he has been playing for the past couple of months. Gooch obvioulsy shouldn't pose too many problems. He should play Flock who has been ok but I think Looch will progress. The third round might pose a problem. Stakhovsky has been in very mug form on the Hardcourts so I can't imagine what he will be like on clay but De Voest and Sweeting have shown that they can pose a threat on clay. The big danger will be Bohli.

Roko Karanusic CRO [11] vs. Ricardo Mello BRA
Peter Polansky CAN vs. Fernando Vicente ESP
Antonio Veic CRO vs. Marinko Matosevic AUS
Mariano Zabaleta ARG vs. Olivier Rochus BEL [22]

Big question will be how MM plays on Clay. Veic has been decent of late but if MM could play near the level he has been playing on the hardcourts then he is in with a shot against Veic. Second Round against probably Rochus will be tougher and he really would need to be playing well to make the Final round. The Final round will be very tough again for MM. A guy like Karanusic will most likely beat him if MM were to surprise and make it that far.

Basically the main Aussie hope of Qualifying is Luckzak and any others would surprise.

Marinko is so clutch right now, I think for most of us we don't actually know where Marinko stands in the world of tennis right now because he has been only playing future tournaments for a while now. I think he has the potential to qualify, hes definetly good enough but its whether or not hes brings it to the table. He plays Rochus next which I think is an interesting match up, I think he will win but a third and final round meeting with Karanusic would be very tough but he beat a Croatian today who was in good form so whats to say he cant do it again. Id say Marosevic has about as much chance as Luczak for qualifying.

Re: Aussies at French Open

Expected results for the Aussies. Luczak has a huge hope of qualifying. Sirianni's next match will be a tough one against a Bozoljac who is in a good week and likewise for Matosevic. Bozoljac and Rochus will be the clear favourites in both matches but Joe's got one of those games that might be able to bring out the bad Bozoljac and Rochus wasn't invincible against Zabaleta.

Baker (USA) - Bedene (SLO) - Bellucci (BRA) - Berta (SWE) - Cuevas (URU) - Domijan (USA) - Ebden (AUS) - Estrella (DOM) - Grigelis (LTU) - Guccione (AUS) - Heliovaara (FIN) - Kavcic (SLO) - King (BAH) - Kontinen (FIN) - Kubler (AUS) - Lajovic (SRB) - Matosevic (AUS) - McGee (IRE) - Millman (AUS) - Mitchell (AUS) - Nielsen (DEN) - Nieminen (FIN) - Paire (FRA) - Udomchoke (THA)

Only Sirianni remains. Luczak and Matosevic both lost respectively.

If you are referring to the players under the age of 20 that are playing in the french open main draw/qualifying draw then only Brydan Klein and Bernard Tomic are competing. Brydan is already out. Bernard got a wildcard into the maindraw and will be playing next week.

If you are talking about aussie players that are actually competing in the junior Roland Garros tournament then there will probably only be around 3 or 4 at most on the boys side because we aren't doing as well in juniors this year as previous years.

Well it looks like there is only one junior this year,,,in boys Tomic ...
thought we had a heap of talent in this age group like,
chaplin, sanders, barker, hoh, verryth , szabo, maraga, duckworth, banes, mitchell, to name a few,,, we had more than one in over last few years
at French,

Hope we have more than one player at Wimbledon in juniors.
