Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

Jonesie gets up in the semis beating No.4 seed, Facunda Arguella (ATP 169), 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.

He then played No.1 seed veteran Michael Russell (ATP95) in the final.

Jonesie outplayed the experienced Russell in the first set after a nervous start, coming from 1-4 down to win five games on the trot to win the first set 6-4.
He then went "walk about", failing to press home his advantage, losing his serve early in the set, then failing to break Russell in the 3rd game when 15-40 up, then dropping his serve twice more, to suffer a bagel 0-6 loss in the second set.
He recouped for the final set but was unable to convert a 0-40 three break-point chance in the 3rd game. He then saved two match points at 5-4 down, and was unable to convert two break-point opportunities in the next game, which would have had him serving for the match. Russell held to lead 6-5 and then broke Jones to win the match 4-6, 6-0, 7-5.

A good week for Greg, and a final match which he could have won with a bit more application and perhaps some luck, which will see him back under 300, at around 250 in the rankings.

Its halfway through 2013 - What do we think for Greg Jones this year? Pass or Fail and why?

Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

Jonesie started the year well with two top 100 scalps, then injury/illness slowed him down and he lost confidence it seems, losing a lot of winnable matches by close score-lines. Just a pass for him, compared to last year but has upside to come.

has earned 145 pts this year, with 42 to defend, 29 pts before US Open cut, so has still has work to do to make the qualies cut.

Hopefully a Pass, and a ranking at around 200 by year-end, if he can stay injury/illness free.

Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

Jonesie goes down to No.1 seed Ilja Marchenko in 2nd round at Lexington 46 26.
Unlucky in the draw as he copped the highest ranked non-seeded player in the 1st round and the No.1 seed 2nd round.
Better than the No.1 seed 1st round I suppose, but only just...

Jonesie just missed out of the Main Draw and had to go through qualifying. May have just done enough to keep his ranking at around 250 to make the cut for the US Open qualies. Will have a nervous wait now.

Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

Good win by Jonesie over Mischa Zverev in Vancouver, getting up in a fighting win 57, 76(1), 76(2).
Came back from a break down in all three sets, then saved four match points at 4-5(0-40) in third set.
Served well and played well in the tie-breaks.
Well done Jonesie

Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

Jonesie gets up against James Ward, who won Lexington last week beating Aussie James Duckie, winning in straight sets 61 76(4).
So good win from Jones, who did not serve too well. Only 35% first serves in first set but won it 6-1. Improved to 54% in second set but did serve well in tie-break when it counted - 5 first of 6 serves.

Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

Jones is playing very well lately. Will have his work cut out against Vasek Pospisil though.

Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

Jonesie does not serve well enough to get over No.2 seed Canadian Vasek Pospisil (ATP89), going down 5-7, 4-6, in a longish match. Pospisil served well on the big points, serving 12 aces, to Jones 4 aces.
Still a decent tournament from Jonesie, who played well to stay with Pospisil despite serving under 50%, but he had his chances to do better against Pospisil.

Jonesie moves up alternate list and into the US Open Qualifying tournament.
Go Aussies in qualifying...
