Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

Greg's having a good week and with only 24 points to defend this week and 20 points already gained he looks to be in a good position with only 4 points to defend between now and the end of september. To crack the top 300 by the end of this week Greg will have to make the final this week in Penza which would be tough but not impossible because he looks to be in good form.

The highest Greg can go this week is up to about 268, and if I'm not mistaken US Open qualifying entry list is next week so Greg theoretically could get direct entry into US Open qualies this year if he can win this challenger. That would be huge for Greg if he could pick up his first challenger victory here.

Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

Good to see Greg into the SF of Penza with a straight sets win. Hopefully he can keep it up although his semi will be hard against Marchenko or Elgin.

Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

This is the best result hes ever had. He has never made it past a quarterfinal at a challenger event and now he takes what looks like an in form player out in straight sets. The next round will be very tough but anything from here is a bonus for Greg.

Also with this result he looks set to surge up the rankings, I hope he finishes the year inside the top 250.

EDIT: forgot about Burnie like 3 years ago where he made the final. Still the best overseas result hes ever had.

Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

Got outed in the semis, not a bad effort and should be very close to top 300 with this result and has direct entry in to another challenger next week with no points to defend.

Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

Another challenger quarterfinal for Greg. Plays an unseeded player in the quarters so has a big chance to make another semi here. Also he will crack the top 300 after this week which is always good.

Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

Greg is now at a career high ranking of 291. He is also seeded 7th in this weeks challenger in Almaty, Kazahkstan. Play Tsung-Hua Yang first round which will be very tough if he can win that match he should make quarters.

With not much left to defend this year and a ranking high enough to get direct entry into most challengers Greg should be able to finish the year inside the top 250 if he makes a couple of more good results. I'm hoping he finishes inside the top 250 so he gets direct entry into Australian Open qualifying in 2010.

Kazakhstan 1R:

Greg Jones AUS [7] def. Tsung-Hua Yang TPE | 7-5 7-5

Has the 1st seed in his quarter of the draw, but shouldn't have much trouble making it that far.

The number one seed got knocked out in the first round so he is the highest ranked player left in his quarter. Hopefully he makes semis, that would be a good result.

Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

Beat Harel Levy in 3 tight sets. Good solid win in a highly ranked challenger event. Next faces Lester Cook next who took out the number one seed in the last round. You really get the feeling that Greg will be a solid challenger player next year and will be knocking on the door of ATP tournaments soon.

Also good news that he had 24 points to defend this week and he has already gained 20 so he should and with no more points to defend this year he should be very close to finishing in the 250 at the end of the year which means direct entry into Australian Open qualifying and perhaps even a main draw wildcard.

Re: Greg Jones Cheering Thread

A very good week for him. He shouldn't have too many troubles getting directly into the AO Qualies draw considering the cutoff was around the 300 mark last year I think (not 100% though). I think he will probably get a maindraw wildcard into Sydney but not sure about the AO.
