Re: John "the Mailman" Millman Cheering Thread
[QUOTE=Sombrerero loco;12387973]John just wrote a great blog on his official webpage.
John going out on a limb in his blog and telling it like it is. A very succinct and well thought out article.
Futures prize-money has been at the same level for over a decade now, and expenses have risen an average of 3-5% each year, meaning taht expenses have gone up over 60% in that period.
As for Australia - only two Challengers a year !! and the Futures are held in "Whoop-woop" - costing a fortune for players to travel -
$800 return airfare to Darwin, more to Alice Spring, where is Cairns? and then there is Rockhampton and Burnie - all small towns with expensive accommodation. The fall-out rate is phenomemal - and all players trying to make it on the circuit face a huge financial impost. Not many players receive any "monetary" help from the National Association (mainly assisted shared coaching).
For a player earning $50k on the circuit per annum, the cost is over $75k a year - and that depends on to where they travel to compete.
Another aspect of the circuit in Australia is how basic the amenities are at most of the venues, compared to playing in the USA or Europe, and even many places in Asia, where the game is well received, very popular and players are accorded the respect they deserve for being an elite player - with housing provided, "+H" tournaments and courtesy cars.
The ITF and Tennis Australia are promoting a game only for the rich and not one thate can be pursued at a higher level for average income families.
