3rd round is a very good result. He's 4-2 in Slams this year. Murray next.

Re: John "the Mailman" Millman Cheering Thread

Just have to record on the Mailman's site that
He frigging won his first round match at the 2016 Rio Olympics against Lithuanian Ricardis Berankis 60 60. First time in Olympic history a double bagel is recorded.
Well done John Millman the mailman, milkman.

And he also enjoyed the experience of marching in the opening ceremony the night before.
What a buzz for him

Re: John "the Mailman" Millman Cheering Thread

Yes, John had a very good Olympics - should certainly have won a set off Nishikori, at least.

His social media thank you post afterwards said "Am so motivated for what's ahead", and he's certainly made good on that motivation by immediately qualifying for Cincinatti! That's a fourth Masters MD appearance for the season now, and a very winnable first round against fellow qualifier Malek Jaziri.

The Mailman is in need of some points, too. Going to the Olympics meant that he wasn't really able to defend the 180 points coming off from his Lexington and Aptos Challenger wins last year, which left him 188 points short of his 2015 tally between Wimbledon and the end of the USO - so anything he can add here and over the next two tournaments as well will help him greatly.

Re: John "the Mailman" Millman Cheering Thread

Oh wow,
after qualifying,
Mailman is delivered a fellow qualifier, 32 year-old Tunisian Malek Jaziri (ATP62)
and gets the better of him, outlasting him in three sets, winning 64 57 63,
to advance to the second round and get some valuable ranking points.

Excellent stuff, well done John.

Re: John "the Mailman" Millman Cheering Thread

A couple of really good, grinding three set wins for John in Winston-Salem so far - first qualifier Nishioka, then #8 seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

Bjorn Fratengelo next, so The Mailman has a good chance of making it to a second ATP 250 QF for the year. As ever with these kind of tournaments though, I guess he has to weigh up whether to go for the points here or conserve some energy in the tank for the USO next week...

Into the quarter-finals with a third straight three set win. Plays Gasquet next. Someone of his career and ranking should go all out in these events in my opinion, regardless of whether there is a Grand Slam next week.

Totally agreed!

He could find himself with Djokovic or someone first round next week. In theory there are 14 possible R1 or R2 opponents with a higher ranking than the possible opponents between him and winning this tournament. In fact it is very likely to easier to win this (250 points) than to earn 90 points in a slam.

In fact to earn even 180 points in a slam, he has to beat a top 16 play (all below 16 will be seeded to meet a top 16 in the R32), or someone who has already defeated a top 16 player.

Statistically just as easy to win this, as to earn 180 points in the slam.

His next match is the no1 seed, why would he not go all out!

Re: John "the Mailman" Millman Cheering Thread

Beats Gasquet in straight sets! Faces either Carreno Busta or Kuznetsov in the semis, with the highest ranked possible opponent in a final being Bautista Agut. Amazing opportunity for the mailman now.

Re: John "the Mailman" Millman Cheering Thread

Yes, it's quite incredible that in every chunk of the 2016 season to date John has now exceeded his totals from 2015:

Start to DC1 - 175 (75)
Golden Swing - 50 (0)
Clay - 70 (66)
Grass - 110 (70)
NA Summer - 200 (198)

He earned another 202 points after the USO to the end of the season in 2015 - obviously not all will now have to be defended as he hits his 18 tournaments, but it does mean there's still work to do.

John said after his loss to Thiem:

Quote:
“I feel as if my ranking should be better than what it is. I’ve got to push on and get higher up.”
but it's difficult to see how this can be achieved unless he has an even bigger breakthrough somewhere.

And with the injury to Kyrgios, it's entirely likely that the Asian Challengers he has pencilled into his schedule will be erased after Lleyton gives him a call...

Re: John "the Mailman" Millman Cheering Thread

And it seems the little injury niggles that the ATP physios can certainly manage better than at the Challenger level finally caught up with John in the end:

No Cookies | The Courier Mail

Fingers crossed that rest and treatment enables The Mailman to have a full pre-season and keep his greatest asset - his endurance and competitive spirit - intact for 2017.

As usual with News Ltd reporting of tennis though, there's not a lot of thinking ahead in the article:

Quote:
The Brisbane International had a direct entry cut-off of No.75 in 2016 and Millman might not know until late this month if his ranking is high enough to make him a direct entry.
Er...Brisbane is probably going to be even stronger in 2017 than 2016, and because he's not playing again this year John's ranking has dropped to 86 live. He'll breeze a WC though, and it will be nice for him to play his home tournament again.

Lovely photo of our man Johnny on Pat Rafter Arena, too:
