Another impressive result from Mato - downing former world top 10 player Nikolay Davydenko 64 75.
Came from a break down in first set. was broken twice in 2nd set but broke the Russian three times. Good returning.
Plays Raonic next up. Will be an interesting match, considering Mato is now in form.
Australia’s Marinko Matosevic has credited new coach Mark Woodforde with salvaging his US hardcourt season after scoring arguably the biggest win of his career to reach the ATP Citi Open quarterfinals.
Marinko not quite on as he loses at the death to Tursonov.
Mato started very gingerly and missed too many returns. Tursonov served well on the break-points, especially to the Add-court, denying Mato 6 break-points.
Mato recovered well, playing much better in the second half of the set, and finally broke back after four break-points were snuffed out by Tursonov at 4-3, then breaking again immediately. Mato had his chances in the second set (3 bps) but again Tursonov was able to raise his game, and forced Mato to save 4 (out of 4) break points. The tie-break was close, both holding serve until Tursonov got the mini-break to go 5-4 up and serve out the set.
A huuuge pity as Mato could have won this match had he been firing frm the get-go. Seemed to be a bit impatient in that first set and missed wide and long quite a bit, when pulling the trigger at the worng time/or when unbalanced. But good to get some wins under the belt and knock off a top twenty player like Raonic. Difficult for him to get up mentally again after that Rnd 16 match.
