Re: Samuel Groth: The Forgotten Australian

Champaign Challenger

Final: Not to be for Sam - he wins the first set 63, drops the second set 36 and then in a big serving third set by both players, he does not face a break point but is unable to win the one break-point faced by Sandgren and the set goes to the tie-break but Sandgren comes out on top winning the tiebreak 7-4, to deny Aussie Sam and win the title 36 63 76(4).
A good tournament by Sam, whose half of the draw opened up nicely for him and he was able to take advantage. Back into the top 200 for Sam.

Re: Samuel Groth: The Forgotten Australian

In Toyota, Groth on his way to winning his belated first round match, up 5-2 in the 3rd against Brit Alexander Ward (ATP343).
And, as in Champaign last week, the draw has opened up for him, with the No.2 seed Soeda knocked out by Mate Pavic.
Go Groth son, ride your luck...

Won 76(3) 57 62

Toyota Challenger

Round 2: Groth carves his way past Croatian Mate Pavic (ATP370) with a two set 63 64 win, into the QF round.
Takes on USA's 24 year-old Jason Jung (ATP394) next...

Go the Groth...

Re: Samuel Groth: The Forgotten Australian

Groth goes down 6-4 7-6(4) to Sugita in the semi-finals of Toyota. Still an excellent fortnight and pretty sweet that he's at a career high at the end of the year and obviously heading into the Australian summer.

Re: Samuel Groth: The Forgotten Australian

So happy Sam got a kind draw in Brisbane. A qualifier first up. If he wins he will take on Kevin Anderson.

Good luck to the big fella. Will be so exciting to see who he draws. A great start to the year should he win.

Great win by Sam tonight. Perhaps the biggest of his career.

Re: Samuel Groth: The Forgotten Australian

Next up Anderson. If he's serving well he could cause an upset.

Re: Samuel Groth: The Forgotten Australian

Excellent serving from Groth and some good returns. Disappointed with some of his volleying and groundies but did enough to get a good win.
Big serving match coming up.

Re: Samuel Groth: The Forgotten Australian

It seems Groth can only play his best as an underdog. He really just scraped through against Herbert. But good win nevertheless.

Re: Samuel Groth: The Forgotten Australian

Sam gets the final wildcard into Sydeny and he will play Radek Stepanek.
