A little bit surprised that Borna never had Nice (or Geneva) on his schedule to attempt to defend his semifinal points from last year. But they're probably thinking of the bigger picture I suppose with the French Open. What is more surprising though is he's only playing one grass tournament (Halle ATP500) before Wimbledon. I know at the moment he can only gain points at ATP250s by reaching the semifinals or better (because 45 points or less at those tournaments will go into his non countables right now
), but getting competitive matches on the surface he is quite uncomfortable on might have been a good idea?
Btw if Borna plays Davis Cup, could he be missing Umag?
July 15-17 Davis Cup QFs at Portland USA (west coast), hardcourts
July 18-24 Umag, clay
July 25-31 Canada Masters (Toronto), hardcourt
During the July 18-24 week there is a ATP500 in Washington DC (hardcourt) he could choose to play instead of Umag
Borna could have "vultured" some points before RG that's for sure. He concentrated on RG and reached R3 which is respectable. You said it yourself, he has a problem with the non countables right now.
Considering grass, I think he finally "figured it out" in Wimbledon. Until that, he was atrocious on the surface. Still, we won't see him gaining a lot of points there this season. I guess he's focusing on traning at the moment, more than matches. Hope he starts training his ROS, because it hasn't improved since he turned pro.
Borna will definitely play for Croatia. Haven't thought about how it affects Umag.
But it makes more sense that he goes to Washington and plays a traditionally weak ATP500 on the surface that suits him more (fast hard > clay, imo!) Even though I was looking forward to watching him in Umag.
However, we have to consider that his manager is also the organizer of ATP Umag. (and he is trying to turn it into a HC event aswell)
