Re: Thanasi Kokkinakis

it's not a very nice story. Time for ATP think about it, but more questions to Marinko.

Re: Thanasi Kokkinakis

Yes I don't think Thanasi should bear any responsibility for this, no indication he was in any way involved in MM's actions. He was playing very well as far as I can see, until for whatever reason he lost several break points and thus the set. But if they'd kept on playing might well have won - his stats certainly looked better on the face of it, but we will never know.

On MM. Well, the positive interpretation would be that Matosovic suddenly decided he didn't want to lose to the Kokk, put his all into it, and did himself an injury in the process. Pretty stupid though if that's what happened given that he knew he was in anyway.

If he didn't want to keep playing what seems to have been a hard fought game, could just have put less effort in... (I'm not advocating tanking, just treating it as a practice match rather than the final of a slam!).

But if he plays tomorrow it clearly won't have been that serious - so why not play it out?

He's not the only one who has done this of late though, so the rules really do need another look at.

Re: Thanasi Kokkinakis

There are two issues I think - the rules on lucky losers, which should be amended to follow those of grand slams (mind you, Toronto's low quality draw would need to be fixed as well, that shower of bagels in R1 was pathetic) so no one is automatically in, plus if you retire shouldn't be then able to play md.

Second is appropriate penalties for players who claim injury or tank. Always hard to assess the later of course, a problem being the example set even unto to the very top of the game.

Re: Thanasi Kokkinakis

So all's well that ends well(ish) - MM has withdrawn, the Kokk has won his first set against Anderson, those articles about determination to challenge Nick's achievements seem to have something in them, playing infinitely better than at that challenger! Now if only it would stop raining and he can take it out...

Re: Thanasi Kokkinakis

Went down but some great promising throughout. Great first set but couldn't maintain his first serve rate. Got to think all those rain breaks didn't help, plus a med time timeout and limping a bit. Still, well done I think.

Re: Thanasi Kokkinakis

Yes me too. Anderson pulled himself up a bit, and lots to like in the Kokk throughout. But he started out on a high, collapsed a bit second set, back up on ins in third, but looked pretty exhausted and couldn't win the points.

First set first serves in: 64% won: 88%
Second set: 56%/47%
Third set: 65/69%

Re: Thanasi Kokkinakis

Hmm, looked at the stats more closely and maybe it is just that Anderson lifted his game. Didn't feel that way though, watching. The Kokk was gettinga lot of good points back.

Bad luck Kokk. A good effort against a solid player.

Re: Thanasi Kokkinakis

I always thought Thanasi would end up the better player between he and Nick, but I'm not so sure. I think he has the game, but with the mental side of it, it's something pretty rare Nick has to be able to step up in the big moments in matches, when others crack.

And people develop and different speeds. Just because someone is better at a younger age or breaks through earlier does not mean they will have the better career over all.

Re: Thanasi Kokkinakis

In the match against Anderson it all came down to just one point really, no reason not to be positive.
