He did. Which is good because I don't think he was gonna qualify
Hopefully he gets a favorable draw

Re: Robby in the US spring season.

He won first round in 4 sets against Querrey, good win he now takes on Starace.

Re: Robby in the US spring season.

Robby It was really great FINALLY seeing him win a first Rd Match I would have said since this is now The French Open we should have started a separate thread for it. But sadly since Robby next plays a player from Italy--there is probably no need for another thread The players from Italy are very good on the clay IMHO.

Re: Robby in the US spring season.

Well, not all Italian players are necessarily better than Robby on clay, but Starace probably is. It is a tough match, but could be a lot worse. It's certainly "winnable" however it seems that Robby's success today may have had as much to do with Sam being somewhere else mentally. Still good for Robby nonetheless.

Re: Robby in the US spring season.

Robby I'm so happy for him to FINALLY put some wins together--in a Slam no less! We should have started a new thread for The French Open, but I wouldn't want to do it now because it might jinx him And playing J.C. may be enough of a jinx My memories of J.C. ALWAYS go back to The U.S. Open back in 2003 when Andy defeated him to win the Open.

Re: Robby in the US spring season.

Great job by Robby. Did not expect him ever to reach R3 at French Open again.
Don't see him beating Ferrero, but a good fight is possible for sure!

Re: Robby in the US spring season.

honestly, I'm shocked he didn't self-destruct in the fifth set, because it looked like that's how the match was going. He admitted in the presser that he could feel JCF raising his game in the third and fourth sets, and that he felt it was anyone's game in the fifth set... It's good that Robby still fought to keep going, and stayed in it.

So happy that he made the 4th round again at Roland Garros... the sad thing is that he hasn't been to the 4th round of any other major two times... (even though he's made the 4th round of every slam at least once)

Robby And idolwatcher1 is back I and this Forum have really missed you!!!!!!!!! I have also been shocked that Robby didn't self-destruct even before he got to J.C.! He has dropped sets in his Matches, but didn't let that bother him--for a welcome change
But from idolwatcher1's talk about the presser Robby is still thinking and feeling the wrong way He should be thinking I'm going to win this--not that it's anyone's game in the fifth set Sucessful players always think they can win--true they don't always win not even The Fed--but they always think they can win. Robby either doesn't believe in himself enough or he doesn't believe in his tennis game enough? That is his problem--he has to BELIEVE! Of course that's easy for me to say I can't even play tennis And I hope you will be back more often idolwatcher1 we really need you here

Re: Robby in the US spring season.

I read the transcript of Robby's press conference and he didn't sound defeatist at all. I got the impression that he was just calling it the way he saw it... JC kept fighting and didn't give up, he dipped a bit, but things were still pretty even.

After he lost (the second set), I knew he was going to try to make a charge. I went down a notch in my level. But, you know, hat's off to him; he competed well. When it got into the fifth, it's anybody's match. We've been out there for a few hours, and we're both feeling pretty confident. Just, you know, hung in there.

Answering another question a little later, he said I just competed well throughout the whole match. I never got down on myself, and always gave myself another opportunity to see another point.

Hey! I really wasn't expecting Robby to make the 4th round at Roland Garros again, especially with the unfortunate year he's had so far But this was a great showing for him!! And he's the last American man at Roland Garros for a third year

So, it looks like he's an alternate in next week's tournament in London, and is going to get direct entry into that. Hopefully, he can practice on the grass and make that transition I really want to see him do better on grass than he has in the past. It sucks when you come off of a tournament like this and then lose in the first round of the next one, but he could draw anyone, so he needs to be ready to play at his very best

idolwatcher1 did you know about Robby's neck problem?
When you always used to be here you always knew EVERYTHING about Robby. I didn't know he had had a problem with a nerve in his neck that was so painful he could barely move his head I didn't know he had an injection which didn't work and then he had to have surgery on the nerve to stop the nerve from causing him to feel the pain. One of the commentators of his Match against Nole said the surgery would last 18 months, but didn't say what would happen after that?????????!!!!!!!!!!!! You know Robby has had a lot of nagging injuries in his career. Most have not been the type to get the press attention like Tommy's 3 shoulder surgeries and his latest surgery on his hip. Robby to me always LOOKS so fit and healthy that I think he is fit and healthy when many times that apparently isn't true at all I think I have sometimes blamed Robby unfairly for poor play when he was actually hurt But I was happy to see him again do so well at The French Open If he hadn't come up against Nole, who knows he might have gone even further At least his ranking got a lot of help with the Matches he was able to win I'm rewarding Robby with a thread for the grass court season

Yes, I read about Robby's condition, and the surgical procedure he had done to make the pain go away. I'm really glad that Robby was able to get that done, because he said it took up energy in his matches just wondering how his neck was going to react to each point or what could go wrong because of it, and that's a horrible thing for a player to have to think about, when your goal is to focus on playing your best match and beating your opponent on court.

I read all of his pressers from Roland Garros (from the website)... they posted all four of the transcripts after each match of his. I recommend you check them out if you haven't already. In Robby's last one, he said that he was planning to take a few days off, and then he was going to practice on the grass courts in London to get ready for his next tournament there. He says that he loves the grass, and I'm just hoping it loves him too
