might as well, I guess... But as of right now, I'm still used to him exiting in the first or second round of tournaments, so I prefer to blend certain tournament threads together in case Robby is knocked out right away we don't have a bunch of empty threads. In fact, I vote to blend this thread with Memphis or Las Vegas if he shows up at one or both of those two... Right now, Robby is the 4th alternate on the Memphis QUALY entry list...

Luckily, Robby did not lose in the first round at San Jose, as I thought he might.

Last year, I decided that it might be more therapeutic for me to write notes while watching the scoreboard, instead of just watching the scoreboard, so I did that for this match. * = person serving, and smilies were added for emphasis ...This is what I wrote:
JW* serves first to open the match
RG gets to deuce and then reaches break point
RG converts on break point to win the 1st game of the 1st set
RG* holds at love to win 2nd game
JW* serves
RG reaches 3 break points and converts on first break point to win 3rd game
RG* reaches 2 game points with ace #2
RG* converts on first game point to win 4th game- RG serving at 100% so far (wow)
JW* has 3 game points, and wins on 3rd game point to hold and win 5th game
RG* reaches game point- still with 100% first serves in
RG* finally needs a second serve, but loses the point and is brought to deuce
RG* serves ace #3 for the advantage and 2nd game point
RG* converts on game point to win the 6th game- 94% first serves (16/17)
JW* has 3 game points, and converts on the first one to win 7th game
RG* serves for the set at *5-2
RG* reaches set point at *40-30
RG* converts on set point to win 1st set, 6-2, with 87% first serves in the 1st set
---
JW* serves first in 2nd set
RG reaches 2 break points and converts on the first one to win the 1st game of the 2nd set
RG* reaches 3 game points with 100% first serves
RG* doesn't convert on the first, the second, or the third game point (ughhh)
RG* misses three first serves in 2nd game
JW reaches break point and converts to win 2nd game
JW* holds to win 3rd game with ace #2 of the match
RG* reaches 3 game points- first serves are now at 55% in this set
RG* converts on first game point to win 4th game

JW* holds to win 7th game
RG* loses first point of 8th game
JW reaches 2 break points and converts on the first one to win 8th game
JW* holds to win 9th game
RG* serves to stay in the 2nd set- as of now, 61% first serves in (14/23)
RG* wins first three points of 10th game- still no aces or double faults in this set from him
RG* converts on first game point to win 10th game

Re: Robby in San Jose - 2/08

After writing these notes ^ I can look back and notice the typical trends of Robby's (as if I don't know them already )

Robby will face Kristof Vliegen tomorrow afternoon. I expect Kristof to give him a really hard time, and I'd give him the edge for victory. If Kristof serves and plays well (as he has before on indoor hardcourts), he may not give Robby any room for error, and Robby still needs room for error these days, because his confidence is up and down in matches, and he usually slips up during one of his service games, which is all it takes to lose in straight sets...

Good luck to Robby!!

Robby I hated that he had to play Krisof because he needs ranking points also, but not anywhere near as much as Robby does

Come on Idolwatcher1 get your faith back Robby had an easy time with Kristof I hate it because I like Kristof also and he needs ranking points also, but not like Robby does so I will be very glad to add other Tournaments to this thread, but hey I'm thinking of the "old days" when Robby stuck around in Tournaments Well there I probably just jinxed him big time

you better watch it

Robby currently has a 5-1 win-loss ratio this year This is the happiest I've been for him in a long time

Robby plays James (again) in a few hours. It's the quarterfinals this time, instead of the semifinals.

The last few times they've played each other, Robby has made errors on crucial points, while James seems to come up with "THE shot" at just the right time. I don't care what people say about James' mental toughness... when he's playing against Robby, he just stays cool (and he has all the reasons to). Robby has done miserably the past couple years, and he'll need to step it up in order to win. I don't feel it will happen tonight, but I hope Robby still plays well and stays healthy! He should be proud of the progress he's been making this month.

Let's go Robby!

Re: Robby in San Jose - 2/08

I'm so proud of him making back-to-back semifinals!!... He hasn't done that since makng the semifinals at 2005 TMS Cincy and the US Open.

The scoreline took me by surprise, but Robby said he played some of his best:

"From start to finish the whole night was just explosive. I attacked the whole entire match. ... When you feel that good out there it's a lot easier to go for your shots and take some chances and risks. The whole night I felt comfortable out there. You wait for matches like this."

Re: Robby in San Jose - 2/08

Since I didn't even expect him to do well in San Jose, I will take this result, no question . I hope Robby learns from this match loss against Stepanek, and just gets hungry to do even better in the tournaments ahead.

Robby kept the match under control until the 7th game of the 2nd set, where Stepanek reached his first break point of the match, and Robby was serving at 54% by that point in the set. Stepanek had superior serving during the match, and even though Robby reached 3 break points, he was unable to convert on any of them.

I'm glad with Robby's latest results that he's been able to get some matches under his belt... he really needed them! Hopefully, he can keep this up!
