Re: Nick Kyrgios - Yes He Canberra

Not unnatural he gets a WC. A bit concerned he'll start off cold against a tough opponent, though. No HC match since AO in January.

Bit of a surprise though - haven't the Canadians generally kept their wcs for their own players up til now? But as you say, well deserved.

And yes, tough to play with no warm up run, let's hope for a good draw!

All the same I guess USO is ultimately more important, and on the face of it, was sensible to put time out for conditioning and work on game to capitalise on lessons from Wimbledon first.

Re: Nick Kyrgios - Yes He Canberra

Both potentially winnable on current form I would have thought...and then a rematch with Gasquet!

I suppose with Roanic, Pospisil they don't need to waste them on Canadians to make sure they're in the draw

Good for Kyrgios, hopefully he's up to it after his break. Very winnable R1 for him.

Re: Nick Kyrgios - Yes He Canberra

Media stories today hedging their bets on Nick's Toronto run. Early in the day, Masur and Woodbridge warned may not go that well:

Quote:
"Two Australian tennis greats have warned Nick Kyrgios to brace for the toughest period of his career as he aims to continue his boom rise up the rankings when he resumes playing in Toronto this week...Wally Masur and Todd Woodbridge believe Kyrgios is good enough to rise into the world's top 10, but 16-time Grand Slam doubles winner Woodbridge says the teenager needs to prepare to absorb pressure and expectation...

"He's going to be hunted, people are more aware of him now. The top guys don't want to lose their places and the next two years are going to be really hard for Nick.

"He might have uncharacteristic losses ... it's a whole different world. But if he can embrace being a professional ... he knows how to play tennis and the big thing will be developing physically."

But the more upbeat take focuses on his practice sessions with Federer, Hewitt and now Djokovic, who are all clearly taking the threat he poses seriously:

Quote:
Rising Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios seems to have found a new admirer in Novak Djokovic, impressing the world No.1 during a practice hit-out for this week's ATP Toronto Masters.

The 19-year-old from Canberra boasted on social media about his pre-tournament preparations with superstar Roger Federer, countrymen Marinko Matosevic and Lleyton Hewitt, and Canadian Frank Dancevic.

Djokovic was next on his list and, according to the Serb himself, things went well.
"@NickKyrgios Good hit today bro.. U were firing those serves well! Save some power for tourney ;-)" the seven-time grand slam champion wrote on Twitter.

A cheeky Kyrgios replied: "@DjokerNole thanks mate! Goodluck, always a pleasure, I think the crowd were going for me ."

"I think so too.." responded Djokovic.

"Well, they loved you even more when you gave kids your racket. Good staff ;-)".

Re: Nick Kyrgios - Yes He Canberra

Good win by Nick, his first competitive HC match for a long while. Hopefully he'll be more into his game for the Murray match.

Re: Nick Kyrgios - Yes He Canberra

His game noticeably improves when it needs too - I was worried at first, but he got into it and did the job! Agree on the first match out after a break issue - Giraldo has had a chance to warm up, and now having played a match will be an advantage over Murray. Nicely done, and hopefully will go up another level tomorrow against Murray.
