Sorry for the somewhat premature thread but, as a Canberra born, I'm excited about Kyrgios.

Born: 27 Apr 1995
Birth place: Canberra, Australia
Plays: Right Handed (Double Handed Backhand)

Probably his biggest achievement to date came in doubles. He won (boys) Roland Garros and Wimbledon with Andrew Harris this year. His singles results have been coming along too, he recently won Canada (Grade 1) and made the quarters of Wimbledon and the US Open. Men's tour experience and results have been limited, but his showings have been respectable.

Already top 5 in juniors, he'll be one of the favourites for this year's u18 national championships and next year's junior Australian Open.

Not going to be impossible that's for sure. Wawrinka finds consistency a problem and on a surface that doesn't suit him Kyrgios has a good chance to dig into his defenses and break them. Nadal in the QF's is the match Nick's going to strive for.

I actually like it, looks hot  His RG hair on the other hand....
Well, colour me shocked!! This is the last thing I expected you to say!!

Believe it or not, I actually still prefer his clay season hair over this one. It commanded attention! But overall, I just like his daring to be different without giving a shit about what folks may say. :yeah:

He sounds very upbeat about facing Wawrinka in this article below. As a matter of fact, I believe he said almost the same thing about just playing his game, win or lose, before the Federer match and look what happened there! ;)

I should come and tell you Stan will smash him, but Stan honestly does not care about here with only 90 points last time.

Nick should come out like he does against Nadal, Federer and there's no reason I can't support my second fave ;) the only worry I have for Nick is that Stan's style is even more aggressive than him maybe, all his explosive shots will be matched or better.

No reason he can't pull it off on grass though, and if he does he's in second seed's position so he won't have to face any more big guns till the Quarters or so!

Probably because Thanasi wasn't going to play because of his issues at home.

He pulled out of qualies to stay home for Saturday, but the wildcard Edmund is injured and wants to be ready for Wimbledon, so Queens offered the vacant WC spot to Thanasi.

Lleyton probably wants to warm up for Wimbledon with Thanasi.

Not sure whether Nick might play doubles with someone else maybe

Just had a look at tomorrow's OoP and Nick's not on it so I guess that means Tuesday? Thank goodness I have tickets for tomorrow AND the next day! I would cry if it turns out he's not playing until Wednesday! :scared:

Finally home from Queens. None of my fav players were on but 'twas still a good day! :) The farewell ceremony for Hewitt was a nice touch. Although it would have been so much better if he'd won the match! :awww:

Actually, I found out that Nick was on one of the practice courts during Hewitt's match but because I had to wait until the next pause in play to leave my seat, by the time I got down to the outer courts he'd already left! Anyway, at least I finally get to see him play live tomorrow. :yippee: He's up first at 12:30 local time.

Oh, and I really need for Nick to face Dimitrov again. Based on what I saw of Mr. Sugarpova this evening against Sam Querrey, Nick can most definitely beat him!

Currently on the train home from Queens Club.

Was good to finally see Nick in person, but I can't lie, was really disappointed with how easily he lost to Wawrinka, esp. as I know he can play much better than he did today! I know I was cautious about him winning but I had expected the match to be much more competitive that it was! He seemed to just not have much energy out there! I don't know if it was because of that bug or virus that he was apparently suffering from as I'd seen on Twitter a few days ago.

His serve, when it was on, was a sight to behold! But it's still not as consistent as it normally can be!! Perhaps from lack of practice? At the time of writing his latest blog, he said he still hadn't been serving as he was still recovering from the trapped nerve injury.

Of course, there's the possibility that he just couldn't motivate himself enough to push through the above issues outside of a slam!

I suppose I should have taken it as an ominous sign when he came out on court without the pink headphones!

Anyway, onto Wimbledon! #ComeOn

We are expecting a lot from our Nick, expecting the win against the World No.4 Stan, and recent Grand Slam winner, who beat Novak Djokovic.
Sometimes you will get a bad draw.

Yes but wasn't just a bad draw - he didn't look as if he was even trying half the time, and kept muttering to himself stuff to the effect of not going to win today, get me out of here as quickly as possible.

If he wasn't fit, should have pulled out before the match; as it was, just looked very very unprofessional.

I get that he doesn't do well with pain, and the pressure level is high, but he really keeps imploding this year, needs some serious coaching or other intervention to pull him out of this headspace in my view, or Wimbledon (and beyond) could be a disaster.

Some very worrying comments coming from Kyrgios. Here's the report in today's Australian:

...Nick Kyrgios struggled in the summer sunshine in London, losing his first round match against the in-form Australian and French Open winner Stan Wawrinka at Queen’s last night.

“Absolutely cooked here,” Kyrgios muttered early in the lunch time match. “I can’t breathe.”

But Kyrgios, who has a dose of the flu and was repeatedly coughing though the match, admitted afterwards he was also mentally struggling at the moment. He said he was now going to switch off completely from tennis, even removing the tennis app from his phone and wanted to play computer games and “chill out’” at his rented London house for the next week.

Kyrgios said he had also organised for one of his friends to fly over to London from Australia to keep him company and re-energise his love of the game. His father Giorgos was also due just before Wimbledon.

“I don’t want to think about tennis for a week,” the 20 year old said.

But Kyrgios said such preparation would not dent his Wimbledon hopes. “I still feel pretty confident still, I know I can do good things there. I don’t need to play my way through matches, I just need to chill out, I am pretty tired.”

In the match Kyrgios’s flamboyant style was on show in rare periods of control, but his impetuousness and frustration on the grass court gifted Wawrinka a stress-free victory 6-3, 6-4....

The comment about needing to rekindling his enthusiasm for tennis certainly connects to some of the other things he has said this year (and some of those less than stellar performances) but disappointing all the same. Drive to be no 1 gone walkabout?

Hmm. Everyone deals with things in their own way, but it seems as though Nick currently cannot deal with the grind that life on tour often is - injury niggles, life out of a suitcase, having to play week in week out...

I would have a little more sympathy for him if he had been playing constantly all season without much of a break - but the fact is he hasn't been, and while the clay season certainly takes it out of you, if he's feeling completely knackered now it doesn't bode well for a positive second half of the year...

Well I guess the touring life isn't for everyone, and he certainly lacks the apparent self-sufficiency and maturity you'd expect of most 20 year olds. I must admit I was hopeful when he said he'd taken a house in Wimbledon for the grass season and was enjoying having his team staying with him, but that's obviously not enough.

You'd have to think he's considering pulling the plug early and going home again at the moment. Or even doing a Barty (though I gather she is about to make a comeback). In the end that might not be a bad thing - half-assed performances because he is unhappy/homesick/bored with tennis will just alienate everyone, better to take the time to decide whether he can commit fully.

Some people live for the game, others struggle with that. It's not something you can work harder at to improve, it's just there or it isn't. Maybe he's trying to deflect a little. It's a strange statement to make when he really hasn't even played that much. Hopefully the week off settles him.

Been having a read of the various media reports of Nick's post match interview. So it seems that his love-hate relationship with tennis has reared its ugly head again! :scared:

Could be all that bravado days before the match, was just him trying to pump himself up? I certainly understand why he wouldn't have broadcasted to the world that he was sick BEFORE the match. You shouldn't show your opponent any potential weaknesses!

It's clearly taking him a bit longer than some to adapt to the tour grind. Not everyone's the same and sometimes I think it's a bit unfair to compare him to other tennis players. It's a pity he has to go through these growing pains and learn maturity in the full glare and criticism of the media and tennis viewing public (the majority of whom have never been professional players). A by-product of his breakthrough success, I guess.

Mind you, I seem to recall him going through a similar funk last year just around this time! He had to be coaxed into competing for that 2nd Nottingham Challenger and we all know what happened after that! :D

I'll probably still temper my expectations for Wimby this year though! Lol

Wonder if he'll make good on his threat or still play Nottingham?

On the one hand, he did so well last year right after playing in Nottingham. Could be the key to rekindling his fighting spirit?

Or maybe the week off before Wimbledon might do him good, as it sort of did before AO. Although he did use that week to go full out with the pre-training.

Hopefully, when his dad gets here, he can give him the pep talk and encouragement he clearly needs. :)

:)

I agree! Always got the impression she was the one running the show in their family and that she had a lot of influence over Nick! But she already did the French Open and probably has to get back to her job now. I'm sure George being there will help a lot though. I think, he (and Nill) have helped Nick through this kind of issue before so fingers crossed! Just too much to lose at this point, and it would be a shame to waste this opportunity as a seed at Wimbledon!
