Ashes Cricket Thread

Well the England tour officially kicks of with the Twenty20 match today, England v Australia so its high time we have this thread.

My first play is Australia to win the Ashes - $1.45 (20 units)

I just can not see how England can beat the Aussie juggernaut, Australia are simply better in every department with the exception of a quality all rounder. Granted England have had a great past 2 years, they have not faced anyone in the same class of Australia.

This is the best team Australia have sent to England since the invincibles in 1948, big call but thats my opionion. Batting is all class, look for a kid by the name of Michael Clarke to have a big series batting at no5. England would not have seen much of him but this guy can play, he has all the shots in the book, has the quickest footwork I have seen of any batsman for a while and has had experience playing in England conditions after playing county cricket last year. The other batsman dont really need any explanation, Hayden, Langer, Ponting, Martyn, Gilchrist all world class batsman. When you got Gilly coming in at no 7, got to be discouraginf gor the poms, he tore them apart last ashes in england in 2001, more of the same to come.

Bowling department, Australia have the best opening bowling partnership in McGrath and Gillespie. All this talk about McGrath being too old is rubbish, his past year proves that. Gillespie is an underrated bowler, he not only has the pace but is extremely accurate, a potent combination. First change will be Kasprowicz who has had his best 2 years in test cricket past 2 years. Further he has had many years playing county cricket which is an added advantage and his style is well suited in the English conditions. Finally there is Shane Warne. He has lost a lot of his zip these days, but still can be an effective bowler as he now relies on subtle variations as opposed to those ripping leg breaks. He will still pose a threat, albeit in a reduced role this series.

I have also played the series result, being Australia to win 3-1, pays $6.50 (3 units). England always pinch a test match, most likely after the series is decided and I have also accounted for Englands bad weather to wash out a test match as well.

Bring on the misery for the Poms

Re: Ashes Cricket Thread

Money on the bloody Aussies....can't see England going toe to toe with 'em for 5 days.

Harmison, Flintoff and Jones maybe a handful....but not on all the test grounds.
3-1 sounds just about right.

Re: Ashes Cricket Thread

Ok so after the humiliation after the loss against the Bangers, attention turns to teh big match against England. If you believe all the hype, England have already won the One day Series and the Ashes. Granted the Aussies have been pitiful thus far this tour, form is temporary, class is permananet. They will be up for it today, after the slamming they have copped by both the Pommy and Australian media, coupled with the fact that they are offered odds greater tha $1.50, got to take it.

19th June ODI

Australia to beat England - $1.70 (5 units)

Cmon lads, how about we start playing some cricket

Same here dude. They're not going to want to be humiliated again, although losing to England isn't on the same scale.

We're so patriotic!

Re: Ashes Cricket Thread

I heard a different story on TV - Aussies lost!

For a change why don't we say Poms won!, it doesn't happens so often - isn't it

Well as an Indian, I am really happy Australia are playing badly, and even lost to Bangladesh

They can now join the club, India did it as well

Re: Ashes Cricket Thread

If anyone wants to make any world record - please play India.

I just wonder what would happend to our Indian team if every country starts playing cricket - like tennis. With only a handful of countries playing the game - we always stay at the bottom half most of the time.

Re: Ashes Cricket Thread

really dangerous to underestimate England.....they are a pretty good side nowadays with Tresco, Strauss, Flintoff, Vaughen and Pieterson.....they have a good opening and middle order.......bowling they have Harmison, Hoggard to spearhead....so they are not with without fire power......gone were the banker Australia days

Re: Ashes Cricket Thread

With the late news of McGrath's injury during warm up, I feel the draw is the best option at $3.50 with also the weather forecast in mind. Further, Edgbaston is a ground where if you can see of fhte first hour, you can really make some serious runs

Playing Draw @ $3.50 ( 5 units)

good luck
