Moutinho (21 years old)
Deco (30 years old)
Ronaldo (23 years old)
Simao (28 years old)
Nuno Gomes (31 years old)

That gives an age average of 27.7 years old. It's an experienced team, but not old, at least comparing with some other national squads, like France.

EDIT: Also there is a clear mini-revolution in the team, by not calling up Costinha (33 years old), Nuno Valente (33 years old) and Maniche (30 years old), players which were part of the starting team in the world cup in 2006. And I'm not counting with the international retirements of Figo, Rui Costa and Pauleta. Also at least Petit will retire from the national squad after the Euro.

I was in Portugal last year and they all rave about Mourtinho-i know some big clubs have their eye on him to but when i watched him in the uefa cup he did fuck all so i'm hoping i see some decent football by him in this tourney

I really believe that Russia can even reach semis at euro 2008. They have a very good squad with talented players and an excellent coach, Hiddink. I predict 2 wins, against Greece and Sweden, and draw against Spain. I also dont give so many chances to Spain to advance.
I wouldn't overestimate our squad lol

They are still under pressure that they haven't qualified from group stages for like 18 years.

There are several missings: Pogrebnyak, leading striker, injured in a friendly game vs Serbia. Arshavin, main midfielder and former captain of the team is suspended for 2 first matches due red card in the last qualifying game.

Absense of Pogrebnyak is a bad surprise though we have Pavlyuchenko who in a good form for a change, Hiddink organised midfield without Arshavin and it worked actually ok in friendlies.

Main worry is defense which is pretty slow.

Spain will be hard to beat as they have classier players. Still in friendlies Russia played pretty solid and worked good as a team, so we can pass through Greece and Sweeden.

We have a traditional good record versus Greece and pretty bad versus Sweden (though team of Sweden suffers bad times today, so we can pass them as well).

I guess if we qualify it will be from the 2nd place realistically.

Re: Euro 2008 Group Stage Matches

Switzerland to beat Czech Rep @ 2.88

A very tough unit these Swiss, as we saw at the last world cup where they didn't concede a goal in their four matches. Goalscoring is a bit of an issue but in Alexander Frei, they have a proven goalscorer at this level and hopefully he steps up. The Czechs are very much on the downward spiral now that the likes of Nedved has gone. Their best player and captain, Rosicky is out and they lack the creative spark that him and Nedved provided. Baros was top scorer at Euro 04 but I can only put that down as a fluke as he is pure garbage(famous last words ) and Koller is very old now.
It will probably be a dull tight game with both sides good in defence but fancy the Swiss infront of home crowd to snatch it 1-0.

Portugal vs Turkey over 2.5 goals @ 2.4

Portugal will be looking at this game as one which they have to win as they don't want to be going down to the last game vs Switzerland needing a result. I'm not sure Turkey can play any other way than attack. They have a dodgy keeper and their defence is suspect but they have some very exciting attacking players such as Nihat, Tuncay, Altintop, Emre so I think they will play to their strengths here. They went to their closest rivals in qualifying and won - Greece 4-1 and Norway 2-1 so I think they will go at Portugal and it will be an open game.

Lost.

And suppose I will put the Portugal overs down as a loser as well.

Miserable tournament with negative teams.........if the first two games are anything to go by.

Finally, Portugal scores. Ouf...

As usual, I want Portugal, the Netherlands and France to do well, so this Pepe goal was sweet.
