Australian Open- Quarter Finals

Novak Djokovic v David Ferrer

Novak Djokovic did not find it straight forward against Lleyton Hewitt in the last round as the Aussie favourite had him rattled at times. Djokovic recovered himself well and came through eventually but what sort of effect will that match have had on him? My guess is not a lot and I expect him to advance to the semi finals without too many problems. Everybody knows what a great player Ferrer is but I don't think his game matches up well against Djokovic's. Ferrer did beat Djokovic at the World Tour finals in London in November but Djokovic was nowhere near 100% fit back then. He is now and he will be raring to go. Ferrer has every chance of making this one tight but I don't think it will be.

My Verdict: Djokovic in straight sets

Andy Murray v Kei Nishikori

Kei Nishikori is the surprise package at this years grand slams, though those who watched him last year will not be that surprised at all. He is an exceptional player who works himself in to the ground on court and hits some terrific ground strokes. He came through a marathon battle in the last round against Tsonga and it was probably his fitness and determination that saw him through then. That might not be enough against Murray though as the Brit is far more consistent than Tsonga. He will not make the same amount of unforced errors that the Frenchman makes and the Japanese number one will have to grind even harder to get a result here. This will not be a straight forward match and I can definitely see Nishikori taking a set or two but I can't see past Murray advancing through to the semi finals. This should be a great match though.

My Verdict: Murray in four sets

David Ferrer 9.4 over Novak Djokovic

Watched film on their match in London a couple months ago and Djokovic wasn't right, he wasn't really going for baselines and was just passive in general.

Their match in Abu Dhabi was probably a better indicator of what might go on here except that against Hewitt, for whatever reason, Djokovic didn't look too good. Hewitt is a poor man's Ferrer in tons of ways, so you know David and coach Javier Piles did their research in ways to attack the Serb.

Ferrer's record in night matches in Grand Slams is pretty impressive. He has a win against Nadal in Flushing Meadows and another win against Nadal last year at this same venue.

For Djokovic, I get the feel that this could be a lot like his 2010 exit to Tsonga in the same round. Djokovic now is of course a lot more dominant than he was 2 years ago but something just has the feel here. Djokovic played a long match here on Laver so the health variable has to be on the side of Ferrer who has the superior fitness.

If Ferrer can stretch this one out to 5 sets, I think he'll take it. The Spaniard ruining the dream big 4 semi final.
